Texas A&M falls to LSU in a heartbreaking five set match
COLLEGE STATION - In rare cases, fear can drive individuals to react in a positive way, rising above any challenge no matter the size.
However, the majority of the world tends to find themselves paralyzed underneath a suffocating weight in which they cannot move.
As Texas A&M University won the first two sets in their match against conference division rival Louisiana State University, everyone had the right to expect that A&M would finish strong.
Not quite.
After capturing two quick sets, the Aggies dropped three straight to give the Tigers the win 3-2, improving LSU’s record to 11-3 (1-1) with A&M dropping to 9-6 (1-3).
“Our big issue lately is that we respond with fear. We start holding back. We start being afraid to swing high. People change. Their fear changes the way their body works, not making the moves like they know how to make them, and then it catches on like wildfire”, said Texas A&M Head Coach Laurie Corbelli.
Allie Sawatzky’s near triple double, just one dig shy, couldn’t help the Aggies catch up to the inspired play of the Tiger’s Briana Holman, recording 18 kills and 7 blocks.
People change. Their fear changes the way their body works, not making the moves like they know how to make them, and then it catches on like wildfire.
Despite A&M leading in almost every team category through three sets, LSU found a way to slow down A&M’s offense, finishing ahead of the Aggies in every category minus kills and assists.
With a final timeout called by Corbelli late in the 5th set, a stunned Aggie squad looked at each other as if the match at hand was all just a dream.
Unfortunately for Corbelli and the Aggies, this dream was very real as the Tigers took over the 5th set, winning 15-10.
“There’s no excuse. We got scared of losing and that’s what happens when you’re scared of losing”, said Corbelli.
A remedy is needed, and it’s needed now. For fear isn’t momentary, rather it can last a lifetime.
We’re all counting on it ending before Friday, as the Aggies look to snap their three match losing streak with a home conference match against the Mississippi State Bulldogs.
