Speaking of longhorn swimming, I noticed Cole Cragin was not on the start list although he was on the psych sheet for the 100 Back. This may be partially or fully due to the death of his father, Scott, this past weekend after a 6 week battle with Melanoma. Scott was a good guy and as he once shared with me, a lurker on this board because of the excellent swimming conversation regarding Big 12 and NCAA swimming. Prayers go out to the Cragin family from the Friendswood and Aggie swimming families.

Soni has #1 sewn up. Can Breeja beat a fast field for #2?

Damn I hope so!

"I'm feeling a little better and was able to eat breakfast this morning," she said. "But I'm not myself. My stomach is literally in knots. I'm going to leave it up to my coach (Paul Yetter) to decide if I'll do the (800 free) or not."

Falling ill at the Olympic Trials or Olympic Games is any athlete's nightmare, and Hoff is unfortunately living the experience. And, she hasn't been the only athlete to come down with sickness. Tyler Clary was running a fever leading up to the 400 individual medley and Teresa Crippen hasn't been feeling well, either. The timing, obviously, is terrible.

Tonight's going to be real interesting.

I think the time Breeja went yesterday morning will be good enough for the No. 2 slot. Hardy doesn't look like the swimmer she did a few years ago when she set the world record. That said, Hardy has a TON of experience in these type of situations (which Breeja doesn't have) and the pain of missing the Olympics in 2008 to fuel her. They also swim two completely different styles. It's simply going to be who is the most 'on' in her own style that takes second. I think it's impossible to predict who gets the ticket to London at this point.

Big props to Sarah Henry for making it back in the 200 free. She beat a lot of pretty talented girls and was the only swimmer not in the circle seeded heats to make it back. She's had a heck of a meet, ESPECIALLY in light of all she's gone through the past few years with injuries. I'm pretty fired up we get her back for three more years.

Also, Caroline McElhany must really like being on TV. Just qualified for her third swim in three nights on NBC. And she still has the 200 fly left. Every girl that's had a night swim so far we get back for two more years. What I wouldn't do for a few sprint freestylers that are at the level of these four girls. We'd challenge for second at NCAA's.

supposedly Katie Hoff has/had food poisoning

*Rowdy saying now that she has an intestinal virus

I was just about to ask what the heck was up with Hoff. I'm thinking that must be one HECK of a virus to slow her some 18 seconds! Honestly, even if she is sick, I just don't think she's had her head in the game for awhile now...

Spice - Like I said with Hansen, they probably just rumors. He swam lights out, very impressed with his swims.

That Men's 100 Back and Women's 200 free tonight are going to be slugfests, along with Breeja's 100, this is going to be awesome to watch from a swim fan/aggie perspective.

On a sidenote - anybody else think the Men's 400 free was kinda slow, weak and disappointing?

Great interview with Breeja. Smart, well-spoken kid that has a great handle on the situation.

Is it just me, or is McElhany not on the start list for the 200 IM tonight?

Well spotted, she's not on there...

Maybe scratched due to her having the 200 Fly in the morning??

She must have bowed out to focus on the 200 fly (an event where she has the potential for a much higher finish).

LOB - nice link on the Breeja video. She is a terrific rep for A&M.

BTW - anyone else think the little chat with Janet Evans the other night showed Evans as a prima donna? Almost as if she wants everyone to know "I'm old and here. Isn't that cool?"

I actually think she's a good person and I've never gotten that vibe from her. *shrug*

Whoop Breeja! That was an awesome swim.

I actually swam against Micah Lawrence and her two older sisters in high school, one talented family right there.

mern -- not yet. stay tuned however.

I'm stunned. It never entered my mind that she'd beat Soni, especially after watching the semis. A Texas A&M sophomore who didn't even swim year round in 2008 just beat the world champion AND the world record holder to win Olympic Trials. Holy. Crap.

WHOOP for Breeja, one damn good swim!!!
Couldn't have happened to a nicer person either...

On the other stuff:

Coughlin not making it and Franklin putting up that 100 back AFTER the 200 free?...

Grever's is now only .14 away from Peirsol's WR...

Tarwater really showed up in the 2 Fly tonight.

This was one crazy night of swimming.

Breeja = WHAT A BALLAAAAA
Cannot wait for Cammile's 200Fly!

Quickly:
1) What are Coughlin's chances in the 100Free/4x100Free Relay?
2) What are Hardy's chances for the 4x100Free Relay?

Awesome swim by Breeja. Lots of excited people in my household (we have been having an OT watching party each night).

I am not sorry to see the diva Coughlin not make it.

Sooooo proud of Breeja. What a classy lady and it was great to see Steve and gang on camera.

Coughlin and Hardy both stand very solid chances of making relays. Top six make it (see: Christine Marshall, 6th in 200 free in 2008, A&M's first U.S. Olympian).

Wow,

What a great day for Breeja, her family, coach and teammates all there to hug her neck! Beating the best in the world, making her first Olympic team.

Congrats Breeja!

Breeja said:

quote:
After the race, Larson gave the credit to Aggie head coach Steve Bultman, who has seen her progress from "project" to 2012 Olympian.

"He's the best coach in the world," Larson said. "He means everything to me, and I'm so happy that I was able to make him proud. I wanted to show the world that he's a wonderful breaststroke coach."

This means that Breeja Larson is also on the 4x100 medley relay team too no matter what happens in the London, right? Because I recall that Crocker beat Phelps at the Trials in 04 and got to swim the medley relay butterfly leg even though Phelps won gold in the 100 butterfly in Athens.

If she's swimming the medley relay, I think she's guaranteed to medal. And maybe she'll get two golds. That's spectacular!
dbcooper
How long do you want to ignore this user?
not necessarily, whoever has the best swim at the meet will be on the relay in finals I think. However, breeja should swim prelims of the relay at the very least and would still get a medal.
dbcooper
How long do you want to ignore this user?
crocker was on the relay in finals because phelps gave up his spot. phelps had swum in the morning and would not lose the medal, he just wanted to let crocker swim if i remember correctly.
