Simpson or King on back and Julia on anchor would be good too
this was actually the first combination I thought of, strictly from the standpoint of wanting to have Julia on the end of that relay, rather than at the front. Simpson/King wouldnt lose too much to tu, and Alia would almost certainly make up the difference and then some. From there you just hafta hope Chernoff can keep close enough to Hersey to give Julia the chance to run down Bispo. Wow, if you look at it like that, the girls Medley race is the exact opposite of the guys. tu men/A&M women with the clearly stronger breast/free, and Aggie men/tu women with the possible slight edge (if any for the guys) in back/fly. interesting!

FWIW, they went Wilkinson-Atkinson-Chernoff-Woods at the Houston Invite. I bet that's what they stick with. Gotta go for best possible time, without regard to swimmer X chasing down swimmer Y, IMO. We know Wilkinson is a bigger name, but I'm sure Woods is a heck of a competitor too. I say get them a huge lead, and see what Chernoff is made of on the fly leg.

Of course, they know what they've got running JW at back, maybe they'll test out the other way around to decide what they like for NCAA's.

Girls finish 2nd in the 400 MR. The difference was Bispo's 47.66 vs Woods 48.79. in freestyle. Medrano swam fly instead of Chernoff. Medrano's 52.6 was really good. Hersey was 51.81.

Heck of a night of swimming. Tough losses in the medleys on both sides. Girls took their lumps in the outnumbered events, but made the most of their big swims. Great racing for the guys. Boris, balazs and Jason breaking into the top 3 with less than amazing times was good to see. Winning the close races. Then the breastroke! What a race! All of our guys swam great, that was a tough one to lose, but those times are all fast. Great job by Casey to nudge out the mizzou guys. Omar adds another school record, that was a great swim. Tomorrow is gonna be a fun finish to the meet. I'm looking forward to the guys 400FrRelay. Great job again tonight Ags!

The women's race tightens significantly. Ags up by 44.

Ags scored big in diving with 1-2-7 finishes.

tu killed us in breaststroke. About what we did to them in the 200IM.

The lead was down to 13 after breastroke but a strong 100 back built it back up to 44.

is the 44 point lead a lot? it seems like it is...but I am not sure. What needs to happen tomorrow?

Swimmom -- Only one thing needs to happen tomorrow: We need to want to win more than Texas does. If that happens we will win. If we don't then we won't. The meet is too close to think anything else. Too many things can happen.

WTH are they having so many problems with results this year? Not up on the live page, AA, or Big 12 Championship page. The funny thing is that if you were following live results and had it on "last completed event", they were coming up.

swimmingmom- 44 points is better than a stick in the eye, but it's not really a "safe" lead. In a dual meet, 44 points 2/3 of the way through the meet is pretty insurmountable. But in this format, it can be made up in a single event. Don't have the full results, so it's hard to say exactly what the scoring was in the br, but it's possible that t.u. made up more than half of that many points in a single event.

Scoring was 58-20 bad guys in the breast today. Thank god we have Alia.

The good news for Saturday is Hurrell-Zitelman will be in the 200 breast giving us another scoring opportunity in the breast vs. Friday. Casey will also swim the mile and is the only swimmer on either team with two events which equals one extra swim Saturday for the Aggies.

FWIW on today's action, Texas scored four more points than I expected when I did my draw sheet a few weeks back while the Ags scored 18 more than I expected. So, even tho they cut into the lead today, we still modestly outperformed my expectations.

On day one, Texas scored one less than I had while A&M had 31 more.

For the week, Texas is +3 and A&M is +49 on my projections. Much of the A&M additions have come in diving (+24), 100 back (+14), and the 200 IM (+11). (I know that already adds up to 49 but there have been pluses and minuses in other areas).

Bottom line: This thing is still anyone's meet.

LOB - I agree it is anyone's meet. Just like you said - we have to want it more. 200 back could be good for us - but mostly for places 9-16. 200 breast will hurt us. The 1000 could be good for us. 200 fly might be a net loss of points for us. I am worried about the 400 free relay.

We have to swim fast in prelims to get as many in the A finals as possible.

Once again - the divers could be a difference maker.

BTW - it looks like some of the tu men are easing up. Look at Walters in the 200. They didn't use Fiegen on the 400 medley relay.

I dunno, shouldn't we be asking you that? ;-)

If the Texas men stack their relay with Walters, Feigen, Vanroekel, and Jostes, (or any number of their other studs, although Dax Hill is on the B team) they're going to be VERY hard to beat. That's a potential to split 2 42's and a 43 low.

The girls is going to be just like every other relay for them, aka a toss-up.

The ladies took care of business this morning. Every possible scoring team member made an A Final. 4 in 200 back, 4 in 100 free, 3 in 200 breast, and 3 in 200 fly. They were money.

Platform diving prelims at 2:30. Haley, Janie, and Lorena competing in that. The mile has Hurrell-Zitelman, Nelson and McLaine.

Aggie women took care of business and hammered tu today.

Great job ladies!

The men swam hard. Impressive 400 free relay against tu's big guns (Walters, Berens, Jameson, and Feigen). Damned good swim by the Ags just 3 tenths behind. (look at the reaction time differences).

Jay and Doug - very nice job!

Command performance by the A&M women...They knocked out the #3 team in country by 99 points. I had them winning by 14 at the beginning of the meet.

I missed Texas' final score by one point. I mmised A&M's final score by A LOT but that's something that has tended to happen annually thanks to some talented, persistent young women and a brilliant coach.

Well done Aggies.

Congrats to the Ladies! VERY awesome job this weekend, and way to truly BTHO tu! they were constantly finding ways throughout the weekend to get the job done. it will be exciting to watch them at NCs. I know (and could tell) that several of the girls were not as rested for conference as they could have been, which will leave the door open for much improvement on their already fast times!

Guys 400FrR to end the meet was intense! so close to knocking off the sips! School record for that relay, and should make NCs. 4 great splits for a great relay. Snowden's 200Br was awesome as well, breaking Jacobo's school record, that should make the meet too. The guys are most likely going to have the personnel at the meet to field all 5 relays with their fastest guys. Omar will be on the bubble, so we might see him try the 500 again soon. Getting Omar to the meet will be a huge boost. Zone diving is in a few weeks at the Rec, so hopefully Cam can be ready by then and we can send 2 divers to the meet to go along with our 8ish swimmers.

Oh, and Jay Holmes, Men's BigXII Coach of the Meet! a HUGE congratulations to that man for a heck of a year, and for everything he has done for A&M Swimming. All of the guys team records (except for the 200FrR) have been set during the Holmes/Boyd era. Thats pretty darn impressive id say!

EDIT: Steve was women's coach of the meet (the obvious choice imo), and "new Jay" as womens diving coach of the meet! Julia the obvious womens mvp, Jaele diver of the meet, and maybe I am bias, but how does Grant only get a share of mens diver of the meet? He split the springboards with Livingston, and Livingston didnt even dive platform at all! Still a great honor for Grant, but he was the only diver of the meet in my book

GIG 'EM AGS!

Re: Diver of the Meet, the rules are unfortunate but clear. Two highest finishes wins, so Grant would have had to win the platform to win DotM.

How about this:
Rookie A: 1st, 2nd, 2nd individually
Rookie B: 2nd, 2nd, 7th individually, on two winning relays.

Who is the newcomer of the meet?

'B' is Laura Sogar, named Newcomer of the meet. 'A' was Janie Potvin, Aggie diver.

Sketchy part: the swimming coaches voted on this award during the platform finals, which Janie subsequently dominated.

I don't have much beef over Sogar's win. A diver will really have to do something impressive to beat a swimmer with two second-place finishes.

well that sucks, I didnt realize that

Not sure what the scoring is for Newcomer of the meet is, but I thought Maureen shouldve won it. 2nd, 2nd, 6th individually, and on a winning relay. I didnt even know they took relays into account for that stuff, but she had a hell of a performance as a freshman also. Not worth arguing tho I suppose, since its already been done. Maybe she can win Newcomer of the Year if she has a great meet at NCs

I think they were both pretty worthy of winning. We'd all love for an Aggie to win, but it's hard to argue one over the other. It is what it is.

So for divers, it's not a voting procedure, it's an actual scoring system, so to speak? Interesting.

How long do you want to ignore this user?
Both Sogar and McLaine were impressive. Sogar earned an A cut in the 200 breast. Subjectively that is slightly more impressive.

But as an Aggie, I am most impressed with McLaine's development this year. She was not as heralded as Chernoff or Simpson but has achieved more in her freshman year.

How long do you want to ignore this user?
I agree McLaine's development has been marvelous but Chernoff and Simpson aren't done yet either
