I'm going to be playing at St Andrews in a couple weeks and was wondering what the dress code was. Collared shirt and slacks or can I wear khaki shorts or something? Anyone who has played there know?

When I played there (May, 5 years ago) I wore pants and a golf shirt. It's still pretty cold in May and no need for shorts. If I wasn't 100% sure, I'd wear the pants. It's never too hot in Scotland anyway.

Where else are you playing? If you can make it up to the Highlands, do it.

I believe they have phones over there.

Why waste the money to call someone in Scotland when you can find the answer from people who might know on TexAgs?

I believe you are allowed to wear shorts, but it may be frowned upon. I would wear pants.

An Aggie friend of mine lives in Scotland now. Works for Shell. He wears a kilt when he plays. That must really be sight!

It's not St. Andrews, but a funny story. I played Valderrama a few years back (June - August; noon to 1 pm only for non-member tee times). My wife came along to sip wine and read a book while I played. A nice little girl from the club came up to her and asked her buy/wear a pair of longer shorts because the tennis skort she had on was too short. Oh and I wore shorts because it was about 1000 degrees, but Scottish weather is NOT the same as southern Spain.

By the way, if you do NOT spring for the caddy at all of those courses, that's nae goff. The guy I had at Valderrama was an off and on European tour looper and made at least a 5 stroke difference in my score and probably 10.

Have fun.

Also, the snotty Germans in the cart who played with us both wore pants even in the heat. I think as a matter of course, most Europeans wear pants. Rarely do you see shorts.

Wear pants and get a caddy. Be sure to stop at the Dunvegan Hotel (owned by Jack Willoughby '72) afterward for a pint.

My friend in Scotland (who I just found out today is moving back to the States, damn I missed out) plays a few holes--wearing a kilt--then takes a break and drinks some Scotch. Then plays a few more holes, then drinks some more. It is an all day affair.

Thanks for the advice. I had heard about the Ag owned bar, but never got the name of it.

Do they have carts, or at least a way to pull your clubs? My brother is about 12 weeks off ACL reconstruction, so I would really prefer not to make him walk.

As stated before, if you're going to play St. Andrews (or really any place that has professionals doing the job), hire a caddy. It is by a significant margin the best way to play golf. I think most of those courses have "buggies" available, but those guys will make a significant impact on your score and enjoyment of the course.

Get a Caddy, if you have not done it before you are missing out. They really add to the enjoyment of these courses.

By all means. Wear shorts and a tee shirt.

It's only 53 degrees and raining sideways about 50% of the time during every round.

This is what their website says...

quote:
What is the dress code for the Old Course?

Golfers are expected to wear clothing appropriate for golf. Scruffy or torn clothing is not considered appropriate. If in doubt please consult the starter.

Not sure on the specific dress code but you will more than likely want to wear pants. Also, the weather can change big time during your round so make sure you are prepared. Some sort of golf type windbreaker is pretty much a sure bet to be used.

The caddy is an ABSOLUTE MUST. You will feel lost around the Old Course without one. Direction and distance are not anything like playing here. A caddy will club you up or down as much as 50 yards depending on the conditions (i.e., hit your 175 yard club from 225 is not uncommon). Also, It is common for a caddy to carry two bags in many cases so you may ask for that.

I second the choice of the Dunvegan bar.

When I played seven years ago, you were required to provide the starter a letter from your home club stating your handicap and that you knew the rules of golf. Perhaps it has changed but I actually saw the foursome in front of me lose one of their players because he did not have his letter. The starter added a walk-up to the remaining three and they went off. One of the harshest things I have seen but that was the rule.

It is a great experience - definitely a little surreal. Enjoy. Good or bad it is the round of a lifetime.
