A&M cruising to the title just wouldn't have seemed right. Losing 4 straight holes, making every Aggie crap their pants, before killing a chip from the rough to win the match? That's Aggie style. It's too bad Dave South wasn't available to do the call.

Aggievaulter - I have a pole vault question for you. What height were you jumping in high school? Were you recruited? Scholly?

I jumped 15'7" in HS. I was recruited and offered scholarships to local schools like ACU, Sam Houston, SFA, UTA, and other schools out-of-state like Georgetown, Auburn, all the service academies, Georgia Tech, etc.

I chose instead to walk-on at A&M for the engineering program and, at the time, decent track program that was only 2 years removed from a Big 12 Title. It worked out well for me as I got to be part of the building process to where the team is today, and I ended up jumping 17'7" my Jr year.

Were/are you a vaulter or a coach?

Are you adding an extra inch to your numbers? We had no that jumpd 17'7" in competition.

Or is this from practice?

That extra half inch would have been very, very important in 2006.

My brother-in-law just finished his junior year of HS. His personal best is 15'9". I was curious as to what schools he could expect to attend and what sort of scholarships are given for T&F.

I would assume most schools don't really give much in the way of scholarships for pole vault? Not familiar with how many schollies are divvied up for the whole team.

What's a good school for him to shoot for? I think he has been in contact w/ service academies and SHSU.

I jumped 5.35 meters at the Texas Relays in 2006, which is 17'6.63" so I rounded up. 17'7 just sounds better than 17'6 1/2".

Just curious, what in your mind was significant about a half inch in 2006?

To answer your first question, he can go and vault pretty much anywhere he wants, it just depends on his financial requirements. In Div 1 NCAA, a mens track program only has 12.5 schollies to divide among the entire team. Generally the people that get decent schollies are the guys that can compete in multiple events and contribute to the team in all of them. A sprinter that can run the 100, 200, 4x100, etc is much more valuable than a pole vaulter or high jumper that can only do one event.

If he would like to talk to someone about the Aggie program, I would love to share my experiences. If he were to choose A&M, he MIGHT have a shot at a small partial scholly with 15'9, but obviously those numbers increase as he jumps 16'+. Places like SHSU, Texas State, SFA may be more willing to give larger schollies.

I will say this, if he chooses to walk on to a bigger better program (A&M, Texas, Nebraska, etc), he shouldn't EXPECT to be able to earn a scholarship later on. It can and does happen, but it is rare. Even if he starts performing pretty well, the coaches have no incentive to give him a scholly since he is already on the team and contributing. That's one more they can save to bring in new talent. Sadly that's how good teams are built. You have to have some walk-ons step up and perform with only 12.5 schollies to go around. (stupid Title IX)

Thanks for the response. I forgot about multiple event athletes. Title 9 does suck for all men's sports (not named football/basketball).

He'll have a tough choice. Not crazy about the academics trade off of going to SFA/SHSU just for a few extra $. Any decent academic schools off the top of your head that might be more inclined to give a little more in schollie?

We'll see if his PB goes up this summer. Maybe that would help.

I have no idea what their scholarship situation is right now, but Rice has the #1 vaulter in the nation right now and a pretty good coach, and obviously their academics are very good. They may be willing to offer a scholarship to a 15'9 or 16'+ vaulter. If he is good and has much more potential to go, I'd rather him go to the good guys tho. Point out to him that the Ags are now contending for Big 12 and National Championships annually.
