In case you didn't see this....

Jimmy Feigen, SA Churchill, swam a 19.65 50 SCY freestyle in the prelims of his district championships this weekend. Fastest high school time in history. He is faster than any current A&M swimmer in that event.

I've seen him swim several times and he is an incredible sprinter. He also swam a 43.8 100 SCY free this weekend.

Unfortunately he will swim for Eddie Reese next year :-(

Wow! I was at state when Anthony Robinson was the first HS swimmer under :20. It took another 10 years to beat it.

he's also much faster than any current longhorn... but i guess you forgot to mention that.

You're right. But two horns were as fast last year (including a 19.16).

BTW - Casey Strange beat Feigen at state in Strange's senior year.

faster than/extremely close to the A&M school record if im not mistaken? That time was swam at prelims of the district meet too.

USA Swimming's Top 50 list shows a Robbie Taylor of A&M swimming a 19.25 swum in 2001. I think that swim was a relay leadoff. I don't remember him at all. Our season best list of the 2001-2002 season shows Taylor's best as a 20.65.

Matt Rose was probably our most consistent 50 free performer. I think Matt's best was 19.67.

I remember Taylor...I am almost positive he never went that fast...he was more of a flyer than a freestyle sprinter if I remember correctly...

Look at the Top 50 report at USA Swimming below:

http://www.usaswimming.org/USASWeb/_Rainbow/Documents/5760a161-fb5b-44c5-8995-01cd875e0597/Jan%203%20SCY%20Men.pdf

Taylor's time is #26 all time. It seems ridiculously fast considering he appears to have never broken 20 on a flat start race.

I went back and looked up the meet results...sure enough it says that he did it but I can promise you that is a mistake...I'm almost positive I was at that meet and I would've remembered that kind of a performance particularly at the beginning of November...somebody should call usaswimming and get that time removed...

That time would easily be the A&M school record since it led off the relay...so I know it's not true...

Maybe someone else swam that time, not Taylor. But a 19.26 leadoff is very very fast and people would have remembered that swim. Then again the timing system wasn't likely to be wrong.

??

How long do you want to ignore this user?
no A&M swimmer ever went 19.26, much less in early Nov...it is very likely that the timing system didn't work properly...it actually does happen from time to time...this is probably just an error that was never fixed
SpicewoodAg
How long do you want to ignore this user?
Sloppy meet management....touch pad probably didn't read, then they took the backup time? USA Swimming should have asked for more proof....

Must be a compounding of errors.
Look Out Below
How long do you want to ignore this user?
no way Jay/Mel Nash would have allowed that to be inputted as a backup time...it had to have been an electronic error that just went unnoticed...it happens occasionally...

I'm amazed that USA Swimming not only found Taylor's time but used it without checking it out first....
SpicewoodAg
How long do you want to ignore this user?
It's pretty incredible that no one seems to have noticed this other than me.

A 19.26 is VERY fast as you know. Maybe Mel/Jay saw it on the meet results, knew it was a bad split, but didn't care because they never thought about the meet results going to USA Swimming.

I saw that video shortly after the record. The funny thing is that the guy on the blocks is not Feigen. He is off camera until he surfaces. He has almost a body length at that point already.

Are those called legskins and are they for sprinters?

Which races are the kneeskins for?
SpicewoodAg
How long do you want to ignore this user?
Those are called legskins. I really think the swimmers choose the suit that they think is the fastest. I think you usually see legskins on freestylers and backstrokers. Rarely on breaststroke.

I have only seen women's suits that were kneeskins.

I am a graduate of Churchill and when I was there we won state in swimming and had a number of All-America swimmers. There are still some state records some of my classmates still hold.

dcAg - I graduated from WC in 1976 (!). I was a swimmer there. WC has a long tradition as a top swim team. I'm willing to bet that the swim teams have been WC's all time top performing sports teams.

Spice - i know lots of guys that prefer the "short john" aka knee skin body suit. usually sprint breastrokers, and sometimes sprint freestylers as well.

bogus - typically, the longer the race, the less suit is usually worn (tho i know some distance guys that still wear legs). the thought process behind this is most people think that after being submerged in the water for more than 2+ish minutes the suit generally becomes saturated and heavy with water and loses its effectiveness. i personally agree with this, tho there are still plenty of Olympians who will wear legs, etc for the 400MtrFree and upwards. The newer suits, particular the newest Speedo model, are getting better and using less/lighter material, to prevent the suit from being so heavy when it gets wet. if you compare the older models, say Speedo's original "FaskSkin" vs. the new "FSPro", the difference when wet is tremendous. the original is very heavy, while the newer barely feels wet at all.

another factor that comes into play when choosing a suit is body fat. one of the main ideas behind a full body suit is that it restricts all the excess body fat, and even compresses muscle, thus creating less drag. a taller, leaner swimmer would not benefit from a full body nearly as much as a bigger, stockier (not necessarily fatter, but you know what i mean) swimmer. If you look at a masters meet, or talk to any masters swimmer, they will swear by the full body suits, because their bodies have more excess drag than they used to in their younger years, and they are still able to swim times faster than, or very close to the times they swam in their "prime" because the suit helped contain their extra drag.

sorry if i got a little carried away, but that should answer some questions

texagg09 - I won't disagree with you although I have seen very few men wear kneeskins. It might just be the swim meets I've been to. It will be interesting to watch the Olympics this summer.

I have been told that most breaststrokers don't like fabric around their knees.

Note that Ian Thorpe, the best middle distance freestyler in history always wore a full body suit - from wrist to ankles. Not many followed Ian's choice though.

Where did Josh Davis graduate HS from? I know it was in San Antonio, but I can't remember which HS. I really like the Josh Davis Nat. - nice facility.

Oh thanks. I kind of had a feeling it was Churchill. Man, talk about a swimming program with some kind of legacy and tradition for FAST swimming!

Marissa Jasek, on the A&M women's team now - is a Churchill grad. State 5A 50 free champion in 2005. Codie Hansen was the 5A 100 free and 500 free champion that year.

If only we could have gotten the 200 free winner (Dana Vollmer) to come to A&M we'd have the entire freestyle winning class.

Robbie Taylor only swam one year at A&M. I know he never went 19.2 in the 50.
I think I was at the meet where that time came up, we thought it might have been real at first but it was a touchpad error.

Spice,

Do you know Helen Hyde? She graduated from Churchill in '76 and was a swimmer. We worked together for years.

Is Coach Marks still at WC? How long has he been there?
SpicewoodAg

Marks is retiring after this year. He has been there a very long time. He was not the coach when I swam there. Marks joined a year or two later.

I don't remember a Helen Hyde. Did she have a different last name back then?

Spicewood-Thorpe wore the full bodyskin suit because he was allergic to chlorine.

P.S., from what I've heard, Feigen belongs in Austin, due to his "extracirriculars."

AKA he's a big druggie.

Spice,

No. Hyde was her maiden name. She swam at Yale.
