John David Crow talks Heisman, Manziel

On whether he can remember a season that had more hype than the upcoming season…
“Oh no. This is the biggest season our athletic department has ever had. I don’t recall the 1939 national championship team, but I know that it got exciting around here when Coach Bryant was here. We went undefeated in 1956, but it wasn’t anything like this. The media has made this.”

On what it would have been like if he had won the Heisman then came back to school and played another season…
“Well, I did come back and I went to class. I got my degree the following May, so I did do that. With they hype that there was, Johnny’s got to be commended if he does finish out this semester. I know he’ll make good grades because he’s a smart young man.”

On if he’s talked to Johnny since the Heisman banquet…
“No. I have met Johnny, probably shook hands with him one time before we went up there (to New York), and then I shook hands with him when we were there at the dinner, and I haven’t seen him since then. He’s been rather busy.”

On what it meant to him for another Aggie to win the Heisman…
“I feel great that he has gotten so much attention. My concern is that, he’s got to remember where he came from and how he got there, because it was not one person. It’s a tremendous amount of people that helped him get where he has gotten. I’ve talked to his parents about that. I haven’t talked to Johnny about that.”

On what advice he would give Johnny about taking the Heisman emblem and making the most of it…
“Well, I think first of all, it’d be a private conversation. I don’t think I’d say what I would to say to him on this show, but be himself and just be careful, because I don’t care if you’re 20 or 25 or 40, this much attention on one person leads some people to think that they are invincible and they are the greatest that ever walked. That’s not true, obviously.”

On the attention that he has gotten and what it’s been like for him since Johnny won the Heisman…
“I’ve been very fortunate, because I was Coach Bryant’s only player to win this thing, or, I should say, accept this award, because I have always said that I accept it on behalf of my teammates and my coaches and the university, but it has been something. It’s been something different, but like they say, it doesn’t matter what you do, you’re always the Heisman winner.”

What team was the Ags playing against in that pic with John David Crow running the ball?

I bought my son a picture of JDC, signed by him, from that game and would like to be able to tell him who the opposing team was. In the picture, there was an elevated deck in the background, if that helps.

Any help would be appreciated.

TIA
