He played a little last year, right?
Each Monday during the 2026 Texas A&M football season, we’ll identify a first or second-year Aggie player who delivered an exceptional performance over the weekend and earned the distinction of being the week’s “Overnight Sensation.”
“There are no positives.”
Texas A&M head coach Mike Elko did not mince words when addressing the media after a 31-21 loss to unranked Kentucky.
A disastrous offensive outing clouded any memories of positivity on Saturday, and Mario Craver’s individual performance came in the worst possible context.
The Aggie wideout hauled in 11 catches for 119 yards, a respectable solo showing buried beneath an ugly team result.
After last week’s three-catch outing vs. Arizona State, Craver came into the week campaigning to get the ball more.
According to ESPN sideline reporter Kris Budden, Craver texted first-year offensive coordinator Holmon Wiggins asking for more opportunities with the ball in his hands. Wiggins replied, "We can absolutely do that."
It was clear that was the gameplan. Craver saw a staggering 19 targets, turning them into 11 grabs. Once Craver had the ball, he did his part. The quarterback play made that far more difficult than it needed to be.
Craver doesn't need to near 20 targets every Saturday. He needs Marcel Reed to consistently put the ball in his vicinity and the offense to build around what he does well, but that’s another conversation.
When asked about Craver’s outing, Elko didn't spend much time celebrating the individual performance.
“I thought he competed,” Elko said. “This game is about winning... We didn’t win.”
That may be the most fitting summary of the afternoon. He competed. He produced. He made himself impossible to ignore. He missed a drive due to injury, but came back and registered six catches when the offense needed a jolt.
It’s clear he wants the ball. It’s clear he will sacrifice his body to help his team move downfield, as seen in a couple of overthrows from Reed.
But the reality is, Craver is reliant on his quarterback to maximize his talent, and that remains unclear.
