Notes from Gary Blair interview
* The game against Kansas State was a shootout in the first half, and after seesawing back and forth, his team was able to make a run right before the half to gain an eight point lead at the break. At halftime, the team made a few adjustments and played very well in the second half which allowed them to pull away with a comfortable margin.
* His team did a great job of making adjustments and realizing that Kansas State wasn’t going to hurt them inside. That realization allowed them to stay at home on the outside shooters and limit the Wildcats’ shooting percentage.
* His team is rounding into form. They have played good BCS schools and have wins over schools from four of the power conferences (Marquette, TCU, USC and Kansas State). Generally his team makes a 12-0 or so run at some point during the second half, and they did it again against Kansas State on Wednesday. Right now the team is playing well, but will face an old power in Old Dominion on Thursday.
* Freshman Courtney Walker has earned her starting spot by playing hard on both ends of the court, rarely taking bad shots and she also blends in her midrange shot to the rest of the team very well. Walker is doing a great job, as well are Peyton Little, Courtney Williams and Jordan Jones. All of the freshmen are very talented and have been very impressive at times this season.
* When you’re on a road trip or playing in a tournament away from home, you try to blend in watching basketball with fun and studying. They stayed and watched the first half of Notre Dame’s game against Alabama A&M on Wednesday, and that allowed them to see the difference between a top-10 team and a top-25 team. If they beat Old Dominion, they will most likely play Notre Dame in the finals in a rematch of the 2011 national championship game.
* Right now, the focus is on building the team to make a run during February and March. He knows they probably won’t go undefeated the rest of the way, but what he hopes to do is be ready for all the good teams coming up during conference play. They are hosting the first two rounds of the NCAA Tournament, and they want to make sure that they are the favorite to get through from the College Station region.
