Spencer Tillman on importance of Manziel winning Heisman

Notes from Spencer Tillman interview

* He thinks the Heisman race is exciting and very interesting this year. There hasn’t been a freshman that has had as prolific of a year as Johnny Manziel has since Adrian Peterson. Manziel has been a breath of fresh air to the college football world this season and he is excited to see how the race plays out.

* He has always believed that the further away a player is from the football, the less chance they have of winning the Heisman. Because of that, Marquise Lee didn’t make it to New York, while two quarterbacks did. Relying on other players never really helps your Heisman chances.

* He is not allowed to reveal his vote for the Heisman to the public.

* The quarterback is able to win the Heisman easier than others simply because of the nature of the game. Ironically, the quarterback is also the player who is quickest to lose the Heisman race if he has a bad game of some sort. He believes Manziel is in a great position to change history as long as certain voters have a wakeup call and allow change from the usual voting for an upperclassman.

* One of the reasons the SEC is hated by others is because of the power the conference holds. There are a ton of voters concentrated in the southeast, and historically, those voters have prevented people like Hershel Walker and Peterson from winning the award as a freshman. His gut tells him that Manziel has as good of a chance as any freshman to win the trophy, and he would not be shocked if he pulled it off.

* Kevin Sumlin took the SEC by storm this year after being told that A&M would never have success in the toughest division of the toughest conference out there. Sumlin has changed the culture at A&M in such a short window, and that alone is remarkable.

* Combining the facts of a system that is proven to have success and the addition of a higher caliber athlete should give A&M great success in years to come. You can only do so much with someone like Case Keenum alone, but combining that with a talented offensive line, great running backs and skilled wide receivers makes the potential for greatness through the roof.

* The only team that has beaten Alabama is Texas A&M, and he believes the Tide will crush Notre Dame in the national championship.

On Saturday he said he was going with Teo! Always wonder if he just said that for television or if that is how he actually voted?

Manziel is the wake up call. He'll be the first Freshman to win it.

Tillman is always politically correct.
Are the voters ready?? Sorry JFF.

You'll just have to destroy them all next year and not talk to the media.

Yes, didn't want anything to do with him after his pick on Saturday.

He most probably did not vote for JFF.

It doesn't really matter what Tillman or others say. Here's the real deal. Only four other players in the history of the NCAA have ever passed for more than 3,000 yards and rushed for more than 1,000 yards in a single season. FOUR in its history. Manziel became #5 . . . as a freshman, for cryin' out loud. Can Te'o make the case that only four D players have ever had better stats than him in NCAA history? Hardly. Klein, a great player didn't come close in stats this year. If Manziel doesn't received the award, then I think the Heisman Trophy is a joke. My bet is that he wins it Saturday night.

Tillman left Johnny off his ballot completely. Voted Teo 1.

According to this-

Could just be assumption based on a tip however.

F-k Tillman! That guy just gave us the business yesterday. He's not had anything good to say about A&M all year. Picked against us all year in big games. Didn't even put Johnny on the ballot. I can't believe that Okie Tard is on an SEC channel....he needs to go over to fox. F-k him and his crap lies.

Either that is one of the most disingenuous interviews ever or there was an error on the reporting of his ballot.

I'm used to parsed language too. He didn't ever come out and say he voted for JFF but he certainly indicated it would be the right outcome........and then left him off tbe ballot??

Couple more geniuses on this thread who do not understand that stiffarmtrophy chart. It is only showing his first place vote, and nothing else since his 2 and 3 are not known. He didnt leave Manziel off his ballot, based on that chart alone.

I'm certainly no genius. Why does it only show his #1 vote?

Because they don't know his #2 and #3 vote.

Even IF he did not leave JFF off his vote, then he clearly did not vote the description of the award.

Tillman is a tool.

Manti is not even hardly the best player on defense this year. Just a great human interest story, behind a good football player.

Collin Klein deserves it more than Manti, but Johnny Manziel deserves it more than both of them.

Put together.

Media bias for Notre Dame, cause it's an easy story to write. They get enough on a silver platter because of this, and it is the reason most of the college football world hates their guts. No need to fuel their ever demanding attitude.
