Expect outside interest in Williams to grow with every Aggie victory

It’s that time of year. Soon, they’ll attempt to take what’s yours.

Not the IRS. The IU Hoosiers.

If Indianapolis Star columnist Greg Doyel has his way, the University of Indiana will fill its vacant head basketball coaching position by hiring Texas A&M’s Buzz Williams.

In a column published on Monday, Doyel praised Williams as a man of integrity, experience and success. He suggested Williams was the perfect choice to replace Hoosiers coach Mike Woodson, who will step down at the end of the season.

A&M has reached the NCAA Tournament in the last two years. The Aggies are a lock for March Madness this year. They’re currently ranked No. 8 in the AP poll. They’re tied for third in the powerful Southeastern Conference championship race.

Williams’ career record is 367-222. He previously coached Marquette to the NCAA Tournament Elite Eight. He led Virginia Tech to the Sweet 16.

A&M, projected as high as a No. 2 seed in the current Bracket Matrix, is a strong contender to reach the NCAA Tournament’s Sweet 16. The Aggies have the potential to go even further.

So, of course, a proud program like Indiana would be interested in Williams. Expect more programs that may soon be seeking a new coach (Texas, LSU, perhaps North Carolina) to show interest, too.

He won’t come cheap. Williams’ contract, which runs through the 2028 season, reportedly pays him about $4.4 million per year.

Zoe Kelton, TexAgs
Buzz Williams was hired by A&M in April of 2019. He signed an extention through the 2027-28 season on June, 16 2023.

Indiana and many other programs would be willing to pay whatever it takes to get Williams.

The bigger question might be whether A&M will do whatever it takes to keep him.

Director of Athletics Trev Alberts, always cognizant of the rising costs facing athletic programs, may be hesitant to renegotiate a contract.

On the other hand, he may be extremely willing, especially if Texas fires coach Rodney Terry and pursues Williams.

Alberts realistically couldn’t have done anything to retain former baseball coach Jim Schlossnagle, who left A&M last summer for Texas. Schlossnagle’s bond with Texas Athletic Director Chris Del Conte appeared too much to overcome.

But Alberts surely wouldn’t want A&M to lose two highly successful coaches, especially if both left for Texas.

Fortunately, Williams probably isn’t the least bit interested in another job. Not yet, anyway.

His team is surging. ESPN “bracketologist” Joe Lunardi most recently projected the Aggies (19-5, 8-3) as a No. 2 seed in the NCAA Tournament.

Seven games remain in the SEC regular season. The SEC Tournament follows. Then comes March Madness. A&M has never reached the Elite Eight of the NCAA Tournament. That seems attainable this year.

With each A&M victory, Williams will become more attractive to teams in the market for a coach.

Don’t be surprised if more columns like Doyel’s surface, encouraging programs to pursue Williams. And expect more speculation about Williams’ future.

I love Buzz....we need to keep him. He is a Texan and fits our culture perfectly! I think if Billy Clyde could have a do-over, he would have stayed with us instead of going to Kentucky. That was a disaster. He could have been a folk hero at A&M had he stayed. Buzz has that same chance... to be a legend... if he stays.

I'd rather money whip players than a coach. Chasing coaches rarely pays off for us.

So one random journalist wants Buzz Williams, so we have to write an article on it???????

I don't disagree at all. We are famous for over paying coaches. However, tu has plenty of money to money-whip players, but their coach is subpar. It's not working out too well for them. There has to be balance somewhere but if history is any indication of the future, our leadership won't able to figure it out...sadly.

Recruiting for next year seems like a red flag. I'd like to hear more about that from Buzz. I imagine big heart/strong character kids being a little more difficult to find from HS. To play for Buzz, you really have to want to work hard. I love that style, but I can see where the idea might conflict with some blue blood kids.

If he leaves he leaves. Don't overpay just because tu might chase him

Buzz is in year 6. While this team is really rolling, his first five teams won a total of 1 NCAAT game.

Does Indiana have the patience for that? And do we really want to break the bank for it?

Aren't we potentially losing 8 players? If he plans on leaving, this might be the year

Those who believe coaches are fungible so we should mostly pay the players clearly don't remember Tony Barone, Kermit Davis, Melvin Watkins, Dennis Franchione, or Mike Sherman.

I've gotta say, it does seem like a perfect time for him to go and leaves us in a worst case scenario: competing against Texas for a new coach and with as bare of a cupboard as you can imagine. Ain't no way Payne is staying.

I think Billy had demons that were going to catch up to him no matter where he was coaching. This is not a knock on Billy at all. Just was the reality he was in at the time.

You're making his point. It's been nearly 70 years.

Meanwhile, big contract extensions have bit us as recently as a little over a year ago.

I don't think extending Buzz would kill us as long as the contract isn't an asinine one sided market setter like Jimbo's. However, we haven't been underpaying Buzz at all. We've been paying him top 10 dollars since he arrived (I think he's around the 11th highest paid now as coaches have gotten new deals).

Would be great to keep him but more than upping his salary, we likely need to increase the NIL $$ so he can get the talent he needs to win.

Keep him happy and "respected" but don't get in a bidding war

We lose a lot of players at the end of the year.

I hope we keep Buzz, but it would be prime time for him to move if he isn't happy/someone makes a better offer.

Terry has been there 1 full season and he went to the tourney and won a game (like we did) and took the #2 seed to the wire in the second round.

Right now he's got his talented team on the bubble, but a lot of season left.

I don't think he's a great coach (or even a good coach), but he's not yet proof that talent isn't going to win out more times than not.

I'm not sure I would say "one random journalist". Doyle and Buzz have a relationship that goes back a long way. They are pretty tight.

Well, Billy definitely had "demons". But those demons were a knock on him. He was at A&M at the right time and turned things around, but he wouldn't have lasted anywhere long-term the way he was back then.

So we're blaming human failings with decision making on demons. It's like Billy Joe Shaver said "the devil made me do it the first time, the next time I done it on my own".
