Notes from Jackie Sherrill interview
* The LSU atmosphere will be great, but you can’t get ahead of yourself because the Louisiana Tech game won’t be a walk in the park. In order for the LSU game to be as big as people want it to be, A&M has to win this week to set up the matchup with the Tigers.
* When you look at what Louisiana Tech is doing, it’s easy to see that they are good at what they’re doing. In order to have success in the spread offense you need to have a quarterback who can deliver the ball, the receivers to catch the ball and a running back as well. The Bulldog kicking game is extremely good, so you have to work extremely hard to offset that. Their punter is very outstanding and can change the field position of the game by his lonesome.
* Being thin in the secondary hurts A&M this week against a spread team. He has liked Steven Jenkins all along because of his speed and his ability to always be around the football. Last week, Jenkins was a very important player and without him this week, it puts more pressure on your offense to make sure that the team doesn’t get behind.
* Watching a guy like Ryan Swope fumble the ball early in the game and then score the game-winning touchdown shows how important it was to this team to get a come from behind victory. The way he reacted to scoring that touchdown exemplifies how much that game meant to the team. Multiple heartbreaking losses, like the ones from last season, take their toll on the players, but last week was a big step for the players, students and former students to knowing that the team will fight until the last minute of every game.
* Looking at Kevin Sumlin’s background, it’s clear that he has had the chance to gain a lot of good experience under some great coaches and he has also taken a team to national prominence after being average for so many years (Houston). You have to take your hat off to him for disciplining his players, but still allowing them to form a good relationship with the coaching staff. Today, a win on the road is very hard to get, and for the team to get up off the mat and throw punches back the way they did really says something about the team. Johnny Manziel has helped the other players on the team because now they feel like they have a leader who believes they can’t lose.
* He believes that having Manziel in the Heisman talk right now is kind of early. The trophy goes to the best player that has the most impact. People should just let Manziel play right now and not add any extra pressure to the kid, and if he continues to do well until the end of the season, you can then put him among the list of contenders for the trophy. Quarterback is one of the most difficult positions to play, and there is a history of performance going down when there is too much pressure to win. He thinks that Sumlin is doing Manziel a big favor by not allowing him to talk to the press because it keeps Manziel from having to answer questions that he may not be ready to answer.
