Texas A&M faltered down the stretch, ending its season with losses in four of its final five games. Former Texas A&M defensive lineman Damontre Moore joined TexAgs Live on Monday to discuss the Aggies’ outing against USC, year one under Mike Elko and more.
Key notes from Damontre Moore interview
- I have thought about the direction of the program since the game ended. I am still very optimistic about where we are going. Mike Elko came in not as the biggest name. With him coming in hot, people will not be happy. We have started off well. We can never finish. With those tendencies, it's like PTSD. Trust Elko. He got great guys in the portal. If they can learn from this year, I think the future is very bright for Texas A&M football.
- I understand the frustration. Being an Aggie die-hard, I’m upset. There are cookies left on the table. I want my team to devour those cookies.
- The football player in me felt Mike Sherman didn't get the credit he deserved and got cut off too early. Hold your horses. You have to wait for the schematics to set in and a certain caliber of people for your schemes. We played with great defense that we could not finish. If you look at the offense, they did alright. We have a freshman quarterback who came in halfway through the season. Our three best running backs went down at some point in the season. We were missing our best weapons. I will continue to be optimistic. If we repeat and it's stagnant again, let’s fire up the pitchforks. We have a lot to build off of.
- It needs to be a major step up. You have our best offensive weapons. You went and added to the wide receiver weapons. You didn't have the Ryan Swope guy, who can take the top of the defense or a Malcome Kennedy with speed. Le’Veon Moss was the heart and soul of the team. When he got hurt, you saw how the offense went stagnant.
- I see our offense only getting better. Defense is a momentum thing. You have to be sound in your scheme and technique-driven, but it's momentum. If we are not in the playoffs, I consider next season a big failure.
