Damontre Moore stresses importance of taking it 'one week at a time'

Former Texas A&M defensive lineman Damontre Moore knows what the electricity of the Lone Star Showdown is like, but he also knows the Ags can't get caught looking ahead. Moore joined TexAgs Live to discuss how important it is for Mike Elko & Co. to beat the Auburn Tigers.

Key notes from Damontre Moore interview

  • The New Mexico State game is a confidence booster, nothing more. We did what we were supposed to do by winning in a dominant fashion. The only reason we would have to look a lot closer at this game is if it was a close game. This should give the boys some confidence and momentum heading back into SEC play.

  • It is is very difficult to focus on the game before Texas, especially for the younger guys that have not experienced it. You have to understand we are talking about one of the best college rivalries in history. I might be biased, but it is the best. Being a guy who has been in a Super Bowl and won a Grey Cup in Toronto, that A&M-Texas game still had more electricity and fan engagement than any other. You have to depend on your seniors. We have to take it one week at a time. If we aren't looking at this Auburn game the right way, we will get the same result that we did at South Carolina.

  • Auburn is no slouch. They have played five of the same teams that Texas has. They outplayed and out-schemed most of those teams. They lost three of those games in the last few minutes. That being said, we have to beat them. It starts one play and one week at a time.

  • Coach Mike Sherman told us we had to focus on Stephen F. Austin because we were looking toward Big 12 play. There is a reason games are called trap games. Anybody can beat anyone any given week. If you overlook the details and play sloppy, you will get punched in the mouth. You don't want to play reactive. Coach Mike Elko is always playing chess and not checkers.

  • Shoutout to my former team, the Toronto Argonauts, for winning the Grey Cup this past weekend. They weren’t expected to be there. They went in there and played one week at a time, putting one foot in front of the other. That is the same mindset we have to have right now. Do not overlook anybody.

  • There were many times we came off the field, and we thought we left meat on the bone. You have to do your job. You have to be a pack of hungry dogs and get everything off the bone. That feeling of knowing you could have done more and reminiscing about what you could have done differently is a tough feeling. I challenge these boys not to leave any meat on the bone and to play every play like it is their last. We have playoffs on the line. You have to leave it all out there. It starts one foot at a time.

  • I am not officially retired. I am staying ready, so I don't have to get ready if a call comes. I have two young babies that I have to ask permission from first. We are having those conversations. The game has been good to me. I am happy and have no regrets.

Excellent interview with Damantre Moore. Hopefully, we come out prepared and focused to play Auburn from the start. If we minimize penalties and turnovers, we will overcome the crowd noise to win this night road game.

I was a big fan of his while at A&M. He seemed to have such a high ceiling as a college player. It's nice getting an update on him.

Thanks
