Jamie Morrison's Aggies prepare for three-game road stretch
After a 1-1 weekend at Reed Arena, Texas A&M volleyball will hit the road. With a trip to Kentucky on Friday and Tennessee on Sunday, Jamie Morrison joined TexAgs Live to discuss what he expects from his squad while away from Aggieland.
Key notes from Jamie Morrison interview
- We played Alabama, and they came in and gave us everything we could handle. We came out on top of that one. In the second and third set, we had a little comeback. Mississippi State came into town. They made six unforced errors in three sets, and that's what most teams do in six sets. We had practice yesterday right away, and I liked the attitude we came in with: "Hey, we're going to keep doing what we're doing. We're going to keep being disciplined. We're going to keep working hard." We're in a good spot and ready for the road trip this weekend.
- We have talked a lot about becoming a great team, and one of the things that great teams do is make others uncomfortable. We were up by a pretty big chunk, and all of a sudden, in the second set, they felt like they needed to do more than even the perfect amount that they were doing. Sooner or later, that breaks. We need to figure out how to win that first set. That's the next step, and the next evolution that this team needs to do to be great.
- There was some small stuff from the service line, and we didn't make them feel uncomfortable. We didn't attack space. I think there are some offensive things that we can keep up. There were some specifics that we needed to check off the list. We need to make sure that we're becoming better teams and learning from this, and we'll get back to work tomorrow.
- Losses force you to make changes. With wins, there's less sense of urgency to fix things. There were some small pieces where we were passive and didn't lean in and push on a team like we normally do.
- There is still time to tinker. We will constantly tinker, even in the postseason. I think great teams do that. By the end of the season, you should be locked into who you are, but there should be some fluidity in it so that you can make these small changes and still upgrade. We'll continue to do that.
- Kentucky is good. I think everyone expected Texas to come into this conference and dominate, but now they're in second or third place. Kentucky is in the driver's seat to win our conference. They're good. They are always fundamentally sound. They play a good transition game very well. It will be a battle. They've had some season-ending injuries, but it will be a battle back and forth. It's a fun environment and a great place to play volleyball.
- We need to continue to keep doing what got us to this point. I hope that my objective eye looking back at that Mississippi State played really well and that the things we are doing are right, and we just have to tinker is right. These next three games, we need to be able to grind and get past that first set and do it in the second and for three matches in a row. That's the mindset.
