Renewing the Rivalry: Bohls talks Ricky Williams' record-breaking day vs. A&M

In 1998's Lone Star Showdown, Texas RB Ricky Williams broke the NCAA rushing record against Texas A&M, which featured a 60-yard house call known as his "Heisman moment." Kirk Bohls of the Houston Chronicle joined TexAgs LIVE for another installment of "Renewing the Rivalry."

Key notes from Kirk Bohls interview

  • It was November 27, 1998. It was Mack Brown's first year. He had one really good recruit on that team. He called Ricky Williams, his biggest recruit, because he convinced him to come back for his senior year. He came back, set the career rushing record and won the Heisman trophy. That was a damn good Texas A&M team. That was their only conference title in the Big 12. That team was chalked with stars. It had Dat Nguyen, Dan Campbell, Shane Lechler, Seth McKinney and Dante Hall. It was a star-laden team.

  • Texas A&M was ranked No. 6 when they came to Austin. It was a 10 a.m. kickoff on a muggy day. Texas A&M had lost to Florida State in their opener and then won nine straight. Ricky Williams broke Tony Dorsett's rushing record in the first quarter. Texas A&M finished with -7 rushing yards that day. Major Applewhite took Texas down the field and set up the game-winning field goal by Kris Stockton. It was a memorable game.

  • This Florida-Texas A&M game is a critical game for both teams. Texas A&M has been in the swamp before and won. This game is a tone-setter. Nobody wants to start 1-2.

  • It's going to be interesting with Billy Napier making the quarterback change. He is building for the future. I am sure DJ Lagway is going to air it out.

  • Billy Napier is probably on the hottest seat in America. I think he is coaching for his future. I think that has a lot to do with the quarterback change. He said he is going to play both quarterbacks, but if he hadn't started Lagway, I think they would be revolting in Gainesville. He has to start Lagway.

  • The one thing Napier has to be selling is hope. Lagway is their Arch Manning. Steve Sarkisian just does not need Arch Manning. Billy Napier does need Lagway, though. Coach Napier is barely hanging on.

Then less than a year later Ron Dayne became the record leader.

I was there that day when their Golden Boy fumbled, and the refs just stood there with their teeth in their mouth.
