It was a successful Saturday as Texas A&M got the best of McNeese State, 52-10. Legendary former A&M head coach Jackie Sherrill joined Monday's edition of TexAgs LIVE to speak on the amount of players who saw the field, what's to come offensively and much more.

Key notes from Jackie Sherrill interview

  • The most impressive thing is certainly the win. Conner Weigman was a different young man, going 11-for-14 and throwing two touchdowns.

  • Then, you have the number of players that got to play. When you are able to play 85 players and get a good look at the young players, you are able to see if the young guys will be able to help you. They played ten receivers and six running backs.

  • If you have over 500 yards of total offense while playing backups and third-teamers, it doesn't matter who you are playing. It's pretty impressive.

  • The most important thing coaches look at when playing an inferior opponent is doing your assignment. You are looking more at assignments and techniques. But you also are trying to find players.

  • The most important thing coming out of the game is staying healthy. They played 85 players because the first 22 have a long season to play in the SEC. You want to make sure you stay healthy.

  • I think we all saw the improvements from Week 1 to Week 2, but now you have to tighten your boots up because the schedule gets a lot tougher.

  • The coaches are looking for what their players can actually do. You have to use the player's abilities. It doesn't matter what the coaches want to run. The coaches make sure to eliminate things that you are not doing well and improve the things you are doing well. We, as coaches, don't win games. Our job is to prepare the players and put them in the right position.

  • If a young man has talent, put him out there. I've been fortunate to be around a lot of great freshmen, and I've seen a lot of them at Texas A&M. You can go back to Mike Evans or Johnny Manziel. You put those guys out there and let them play.
