Welcome to Lone Star Lookback! Each week, a former player or coach will join David Nuño to reminisce on Texas A&M's historic rivalry with the Texas Longhorns as the game makes an emphatic return on Nov. 30 at Kyle Field.

Joining us for our first episode is Dave Elmendorf, an All-American safety in 1970 before being drafted by the New York Yankees and Los Angeles Rams, ultimately electing to play professional football. You can hear Elmendorf on Saturdays on the Texas A&M football radio broadcast as a color commentator opposite play-by-play voice Andrew Monaco.

Dave is a class act! Played fish football with Elmo, and he seldom came off the field! Played safety on defense and tailback on offense. All-American in both football and baseball, and graduated with a 4.0 in Economics!

He didn't talk about it, but that tu freshman team our fish year in '67 formed the nucleus of their back to back MNC teams of '69-'70. It was the "greatest recruiting class" in history at the time, with multiple All-Americans in it.

I was a freshman when Dave was a senior. That 1970 season was horrible.
As he stated we beat Wichita State and then upset lsu only to lose the next 9 straight games.
I wish he had reviewed that lsu win in more detail.
As I recall we won on our last possession w/ a Hail Mary pass to Hugh McElroy who ran it in for the TD win.
I think 2 of the lsu defenders had collided w/ each other and McElroy was wide open.
All this was on radio of course and when McElory scored the whole campus erupted at once.
I was living in Walton and everyone poured out into the quad.
Later we went to Easterwood to greet the team home.
Great memories of that game and time so long ago.
As a side note...in my 4 years we NEVER had a winning season.
New army doesn't know or can ever appreicate the pain that grads from Dave and my tenure at A&M had to endure.
We now complain of an 8-4 season.
Back then that record would have been inconceivable.
BTHO the domers.

Thanks for the reminder. It was my zip year, and I had completely forgotten that…blocked it from memory I reckon. Will likely have nightmares tonight!
