Reasonable people: SEC's McDaid not offended by 'horns down' gesture

DALLAS — On the second day of Southeastern Conference Media Days, a horde of reporters gathered to enquire about Texas and offense.

Touchdowns and first downs were not the topic.

“Horns down” was.

Nothing causes Longhorns to take offense like the anti-Texas “horns down” gesture.

You know… The gesture that triggered Texas basketball coach Rodney Terry to give Central Florida players a postgame lecture.

You know… the gesture that so upset the delicate Longhorn populace that they lobbied the Big 12 to make it a penalty.

Of course, the Big 12 did.

"Lemme put it this way,” Big 12 Coordinator of Officials Greg Burks said at the conference’s media days. “If you do a ‘horns down’ to a Texas player as an opponent, that's probably going to be a foul.”

That was three years ago.

Also, three years ago, word broke that Texas and Oklahoma would eventually join the merciless world of the SEC.

The news prompted Missouri offensive tackle Case Cook to utter one of my all-time favorite SEC quotes:

“Take the act out of a football stadium, go put it in a shopping mall or a grocery store. Is it something that would offend the senses of the majority of reasonable people in the area?”
- SEC Official John McDaid

“If you can’t handle a ‘horns down’ gesture, I figure it’ll probably be tough to play in this league,” Cook said.

Texas is now a member of the SEC.

So, the question must officially be asked: Will “horns down” draw a yellow flag in the SEC?

John McDaid, the SEC Coordinator of Football Officials, on Tuesday said that depends.

“I ask my officials to use the judgment of: Is it taunting an opponent? Is it making a travesty of the game? Or is it otherwise affecting our ability to manage the game?” McDaid said to the aforementioned horde. “A travesty of the game is something that offends the senses. Take the act out of a football stadium, go put it in a shopping mall or a grocery store.

“Is it something that would offend the senses of the majority of reasonable people in the area?”

Note McDaid said “reasonable people.”

He didn’t mention narcissistic, entitled, delusional people… You know, Texas fans.

But the truly reasonable can see there are instances when the gesture could result in an unsportsmanlike conduct penalty.

For instance, if a player makes a tackle, stands over his opponent and flashes “horns down,” that will probably draw a flag. Any act of taunting in a similar would.

Former Florida quarterback Tim Tebow was even flagged for unsportsmanlike conduct for doing the “Gator Chomp” toward a couple of Oklahoma players in the 2008 national championship game.

Beyond that…

“Giving this signal, to me, isn’t offensive in that particular context,” McDaid said while flashing the gesture.

Kevin Jairaj-USA TODAY Sports
Brent Venables flashed a “horns down” after Oklahoma’s 2023 win over Texas. On Tuesday, he said he did not have an opinion on whether it should be penalized.

He continued: “So, let’s go back on the field. We have a player that’s giving it. Is it taunting an opponent, or is it making a travesty of the game?

“If an opponent of Texas would score a touchdown and in celebration with teammates going back up the sideline they’re giving the signal, that’s not an issue.”

Some SEC fan bases have their own gestures, in particular Florida, Texas A&M (Gig ‘Em) and Ole Miss (Shark Fin).

Any of those gestures could possibly lead to a penalty, but McDaid couldn’t recall a gesture-related infraction.

“I cannot remember us doing it in the 2023 season,” he said. “I have been affiliated both on the field and in this position in the SEC since the 2015 season and less than the number of fingers you have on one hand.

“I asked my officials to not consider most acts automatic. There are some automatics. Spitting at an opponent is an automatic. A throat slash in an automatic. But, the rest of them, I want to be evaluated in context.”

To its credit, McDaid said no Texas representative has lobbied the SEC to penalize “horns down.”

Not yet, anyway. Texas has only been an official SEC member for two weeks.

It’s probably just a matter of time.

The whining has begun. When will the coercion start?

My dignity as a human being is suffering by just knowing that people are having this conversation.

I don't like how this is being framed. I thing horns down is just plain stupid. Not because it "offensive" but because it's been OU's thing for decades.

You join the most dominant, lucrative conference in the history of college athletics, and you're worried about what people do with their fingers? I can't fathom having a peepee that tiny.

They'll lobby for it, and the conference will give in.

It'll happen. You'll see.

I love McDaid's response. Essentially, everybody's gonna be treated as equals.

Love it.

The sips are gonna hate it because they're not used to an even playing field.

Well …. Tit for tat then …. The Horns Up sign should also be a penalty.

Actually the more I think about it … I still feel that the whole prima donna thing is stupid. A special rule, just for one school's hand signal, had to be made to appease people with hurt feelings.

Do you think you can find a way to stop lying about this? You're not really a journalist, but you should maintain some sort of standard for honesty. Maybe do a little research instead of flying high on your own supply.

1. OU has been doing the horns down for at least 60 years. Texas fans never much cared. We had our own petty ways of insulting them back.

2. Texas did not petition the Big 12 out of the blue because they had hurt feelings which is a reliable lie often repeated around here. In a Texas Tech game, around 2015 in Lubbock, a Texas receiver, Marcus Johnson caught a touchdown pass. He did the guns up (Texas Tech hand gesture) and then mimed holstering the pistol. The ref threw a flag and we were penalized 15 yards. Texas objected because the rule should be applied equally. The Big 12 ruled that anyone doing such a thing with anyone's hand gesture would be penalized for goading or whatever they call it.

3. Seeing people doing the horns down when they're not even playing Texas is idiotic and a notification that the person doing so can't take their minds off the Longhorns.

4. Seeing people do it as though they are firing a magic ray gun is plain amusing.

5. Of course, it's natural that Aggies do it because of their disposition towards tu that school to the west whose name dare not be said.

6. As for "of course the Big 12 did," A&M voted with Texas on every issue when the Big 12 was formed and just about everything after that until they left. How do you reconcile that with the bullying narrative? All votes had the same weight. A&M could have cancelled Texas' vote out anytime they wanted to. But they didn't. They concurred.

The fans of the SEC will be surprised to see how normal Longhorn fans are after Aggie laments about our toxicity, arrogance, bullying, unmanliness, and general wickedness. We're not the unique fan base in the conference.

Go ahead and ban me for writing the truth. Truth has many enemies and few friends around here. Olin Buchanan should be above that, but he's made other choices.

Edited for grammar.

Definition of narcissism and good ol' Liberal mentality. Mock, taunt and trash talk, only to play the victim when done to you. tu fans are normal to nobody except for tu fans. Literally everyone agrees. Best example was the LSU game in Austin in 2019. When all was said and done, tu fans wanted to be buddies with LSU folks; especially because they lost a close game. LSU fans laughed in their faces and bashed them relentlessly (plenty of LSU fans in my family). That'll happen with a bunch of new fanbases starting this fall. Welcome to even more people not liking y'all.

Not surprisingly, you embrace the lie as you do so many others. All you have is tired, unsupported scorn.

All I can do is be honest. It's up to you how you respond.
