Del Conte flaunts Texas' aura ahead of Southeastern Conference entrance

May 30, 2024

DESTIN, Fla. — A little more than a month remains until Texas is an official member of the Southeastern Conference.

Yet, with a contingent here for SEC Spring Meetings this week, Texas was… Well, being Texas.

Texas Athletic Director Chris Del Conte appeared with the SEC Network’s Paul Finebaum on Wednesday and immediately let it be known that the Longhorns are kind of a big deal.

“Have you been to the Red River Rivalry? (Texas vs. Oklahoma game),” Del Conte asked Finebaum. “It’s ridiculous. It’s the greatest thing ever.

“You may talk about the Cocktail Party (Florida vs. Georgia), the Iron Bowl (Alabama vs. Auburn). There’s nothing like this game.”

The voice sounded like Del Conte's, but it might have been beer talking. At least that would explain claiming grandeur over bitter feuds between rivals that have won a combined 11 national championships since Texas last won one.

Jay Janner / American-Statesman
Texas and Oklahoma will officially join the conference on July 1, 2024.

It’s steers spreading bull. Inevitably, the Longhorns will brag that they let the SEC join them.

Not that long ago, Texas and Oklahoma routinely dismissed the notion of SEC dominance. They said the SEC's power was really just Alabama, and everyone else was riding the Tide’s coattails.

Remember when former Oklahoma coach Bob Stoops said the SEC was overrated?

Interestingly, five different SEC teams have won football national championships since the Sooners last won one.

But now condemnations have given way to celebrations.

Texas football coach Steve Sarkisian told reporters how the SEC logo is being added to the Darrell K Royal-Texas Memorial Stadium playing field. He lauded the competitive spirit of the SEC.

“Week in and week out, the challenges that (the SEC)  poses for you… ,” Sarkisian said. “Whether it’s playing on the road, whether it’s game planning against some of the best coaches in our sport or whether it’s competing against some of the best athletes in college football, there are great challenges.”

Certainly, Texas will find more challenges in the SEC than in the Big 12. Those days in which they struggle to eke out victories over Houston, Kansas State and TCU more than likely become losses in the SEC.

Sometimes, those become embarrassing losses.

That’s just one jolt of reality to await the Longhorns. They won’t run the SEC. Alabama and perhaps Georgia do that. Greg Sankey won’t be a puppet commissioner like Dan Beebe was back in the day.

“When you have programs like Texas and Texas A&M in the same state this close together, it’s going to be fantastic. We’re thrilled about it. We’re looking forward to the rivalry.”
- A&M Athletic Director Trev Alberts

Also, whining about “horns down” gestures won’t play well in the SEC. Texas used its influence in the Big 12 to make “horns down” a 15-yard penalty.

That flag won’t fly in the SEC.

When news broke at 2021 SEC Media Days that Texas and Oklahoma would join the SEC, a Missouri offensive lineman questioned whether it was a good move.

“If you can’t handle a ‘horns down’ gesture, I figure it’ll probably be tough to play in this league,” Case Cook said.

In the SEC, the competition is tougher. Fans are crazier. Stadiums are louder. Hatred runs deeper.

Statements like what Del Conte made to Finebaum — even if it was made in jest — will only raise the ire of SEC fans and direct more hatred toward Texas.

Or maybe not. Texas A&M Director of Athletics Trev Alberts looks forward to renewing the rivalry with Texas this season. He expects no ill will.

“There will be no acrimony between the two of us,” Alberts said. “Obviously, we want to do well against each other. This is what makes college sports. It’s regional rivalries. It’s what builds the excitement.

“When you have programs like Texas and Texas A&M in the same state this close together, it’s going to be fantastic. We’re thrilled about it. We’re looking forward to the rivalry.”

It should be noted that this, too, will be Alberts’ first year in the SEC.

He still has some learning to do.

"Greg Sankey won't be a puppet commissioner like Dan Beebe was back in the day."

Yeah, right. That's why sippy got the easiest conference schedule in the history of the SEC for their first two years. I don't know how these asshats manipulate things, but they always seem to manage it.

You know who is enjoying this right now? Red Raider, Baylor and TCU fans. Not because they don't have to play tu anymore, but because they don't have to DEAL with tu anymore.

This is where Olin got it wrong. ESPN runs the SEC now. All thanks to Sankey. Sankey will do whatever ESPN tells him to do. And we already know how ESPN feels about their precious tu longhorns.

Poster above was correct in his remarks about tu's ridiculously easy conference schedule. That schedule wasn't random or made by accident.

The rest of the SEC will see what a mistake it was to let cow in our league. The arrogance of a program that has had one decent season in 20 years and has failed miserably in the big 12 . Three conference championships in 28 years in an inferior league is pathetic. Looking forward to Del Conte and Sark passing the bottle back and forth on the sidelines at Kyle in November.

Sips really like to hear themselves talk, and be heard.

They have a huge case of "Look at me! Look at me!" syndrome.

Their 1 decent season is 1 more than we've had. Their 3 conference championships are 2 more than ours.

Texas college football programs haven't lived up to the reputation of Texas high school football.

One other thing… we will never hear the end of it, if tu wins the baseball regional in our backyard.

I kinda understand the perception that TX has a cake walk and they engineered an easy path for them.

Yes, it could be a little suspect. But if using this logic then you must say that they intentionally screwed OU with maybe the toughest schedule.

In reality if we quit drinking the maroon coolaid, Texas def doesnt have an easy schedule. And they get credit for MI, eventhough they will be down and raise the roof about their dominance if they win.

If Texas wins the SEC then they absolutely did it with great coaching and player development. They get full credit. Period.

And frankly, we got a pretty darn good schedule too this year with all our tough games at Home. So honestly, it gets tiring hearing the whining about the sips schedule. They now play in the SEC and nothing is easy.

I will listen to the argument after 3 seasons. But until then, my advice is to focus on our team and our coach and let the sips shoot themselves in the head.

Cause they are either gonna be good or bad this year. And none of that is defined by this years schedule.

I seem to be one of the few that thinks Texas' overall schedule and even conference schedule is similar if not more difficult than ours.

Excluding our game against each other...
A&M most difficult conference games: LSU @ home, Missouri @ home, @ Auburn?
Texas most difficult conference games: Georgia @ home, OU neutral, Kentucky @ home

Major non-conference matchups: ND @ A&M compared to Texas @ Michigan. Michigan was gutted, but that's still a hell of a road game for Texas.

Neither schedule is an absolute gauntlet, but some of y'all wouldn't be happy unless Texas was scheduled to play Georgia, Bama, Ole Miss, LSU, OU, and A&M with a non-conference slate of Michigan, Ohio State, and Oregon.

ETA: was typing this and didn't see the post above mine, but I agree with him.

Del Conte is a tool and needs to be throat punched for the fun of it. But tu and OU promoting how they are the 2nd coming to the SEC and Kirby Smart stating he's fearful of tu joining as they own Texas.

Trev is out there promoting that we have an 'expense' problem at A&M and not playing tu on Thanksgiving (while Del Conte saying he wants it back on Thanksgiving and thinks that will happen sooner than later). Per Trev, we know how to gather revenue, but don't know how to control expenses and he's working with the A&M President to find ways to reduce expenses immediately (Jimbo payout still biting our arse, but more reductions and changes coming).

The point, tu is pushing arrogance and that a new leader is on the block while Trev is leading us into the financial cave of cost corrections (I'm a finance guy and the AD needs to be focused on something else).

Let's close our eyes and imagine how great it will be when we are negotiating as actual members. We are gonna run this place, baby!!!!

Yes you're correct, you'll F this league up just like the old SWC and the bdf. But one thing is for sure, you had to follow big brother to a new conference. Just sit back and let that sink in.

If Texas is everything they think they are, they wouldn't be joining a conference they ridiculed for decades.

They were more than happy to see us leave but here they are, and will wear out their welcome quick.
