Catching up with legendary Texas A&M and NFL OL Richmond Webb

Texas A&M legend and former All-Pro offensive lineman Richmond Webb was in Detroit last weekend to represent the Dolphins at the 2024 NFL Draft. TexAgs Radio caught up with Webb on Thursday morning as Miami fans continue to advocate for his enshrinement in Canton.



Key notes from Richmond Webb interview

  • Being at the draft last week was like being back in the locker room. Any time you get to see guys that were in the league with you, it brings back that brotherhood. The ironic thing was that I saw Bobby Taylor, and his son attended Texas A&M. I met Moose Muhammad III’s dad as well, and he’s a little bit younger than me. We were in the league at the same time. I told him that his son is a great player. There were some Aggie connections. I even joked with Barry Sanders about how his Oklahoma State Cowboys beat up on us last year.
     
  • I saw De’Von Achane’s success coming. My only concern was him being a track athlete and having to cut weight to compete in track. He has bulked up even more. I think he’s going to take off and be a weapon the Dolphins use again. I don’t think the team was surprised to see him have success.
     
  • I have the NFL Sunday Ticket to watch the Dolphins. I’m usually tweeting back and forth with Dolphin fans. I stay connected, and I think that’s why I got the invite to the NFL Draft this year.
     
  • We had a tremendous time in Detroit. I didn’t get to see Dan Campbell or Aaron Glenn, but I was really impressed with what he did last year. They’re building something, and they love him in Detroit.
     
  • I follow the Texans because I live in Houston. I was part of the ambassador program with the Texans for 10 years. I was fortunate to be part of that. Being an Aggie helped me get in the door with the Texans. I love everything they’re doing with DeMeco Ryans, C.J. Stroud and everything. They’re building it the right year. Any time the football team is doing good in your city, it makes everybody feel good. I hope the Texans do well, except when they play the Dolphins.
     
  • You don’t get the opportunity to see a lot of guys on a daily basis. Bobby Taylor lives in Houston. I got to see Troy Vincent, and he works for the league’s office. I saw T.J. Houshmandzadeh, who was a rookie in Cincinnati at the end of my career. Mentally, you can still go, but physically, you can’t. Still, it’s always great to share stories. I had a great time at the NFL Draft. It’s always great to get together with guys that played when you played.
     
  • I know my resume speaks for itself, so I’m never going to be the guy that is pissed off or self-advocating for the Hall of Fame. It always feels good when people are advocating for you, and the Dolphins fan base has been great at it. Sometimes it takes a while. Some guys get in quicker than others. I’ll just see how it plays out, but I definitely think I have the resume to get into the Hall of Fame. It would be the highest honor, and I would be grateful if it worked out. I think I have a good shot.
     
  • My first experience with Texas A&M was at an FCA camp. I spent a week down here. R.C. Slocum recruited the Dallas area. Jackie Sherrill was the head coach. Me and Aaron Wallace graduated in the same year. My experiences at A&M and my visit were big. Johnny Holland and Steve Bullitt were our hosts, and there were top-notch guys to show us around. I got a good feel for the people I met on our recruiting visit. Slocum had a reputation at my high school, and it was just the right fit. Everything worked out. It was perfect, and I couldn’t have made a better choice. Next week, my daughter is graduating from A&M with her undergraduate degree. She’s a second-generation Aggie, and I’m happy about that. God is good!
     
  • Part of staying healthy was that I was just truly blessed. I came out of a good college program. Sherrill had great coaches. I was on defense with Slocum at first, but I switched to offense. Slocum became the head coach in my last year. In the NFL, I was under the tutelage of Don Shula. I got drafted by the Dolphins, and I got a call making sure to tell me to take care of Dan Marino, who played under Sherrill at Pittsburgh. I had great coaches and great strength coaches. I was fortunate and worked hard. I thank God for the opportunity. I had great teammates, and I wouldn’t trade it for anything in the world.
     
  • Marino doesn’t age at all. He, along with Emmitt Smith, Randy Moss and a few others, in that Lays commercial makes me laugh. He had the eyeglasses on. He never ages. I got to spend some time with him last year. He could still go out there and throw it.
     
  • Who could afford the NIL to bring in Marino today? It could be crazy. I think back to like Johnny Manziel when he won the Heisman at A&M. He put A&M on a national scale. He had an incredible college career. When you reach that level, the NIL could be crazy. Back when Marino was at Pitt, they threw the ball, but most people were running it. Most teams were downhill. He was dropping back and slinging it. As long as he could throw the football, he’d be happy.
     
  • I haven’t had the chance to meet Mike Elko, but all I’ve heard is good things. He has restored order from the moment he got here. He addressed a lot of needs A&M had in the transfer portal. I don’t expect a drop-off. We signed good high school prospects, too, so you have a mix of young talent and experience. I’m highly impressed, and I think we’re in good hands. I’m excited for the 2024 football season.
     
  • The last couple of years have been tough to watch. You have guys that have the caliber to play better, and two or three games shifted the outcoming of the whole season. It puts a bad taste in your mouth. When you know that we have the guys that can win those games, but they couldn’t get it done, it’s frustrating. There is a new sheriff in down. The buzz is growing again about the A&M-Texas game. There are going to be some good times for A&M football again, and I think fans are going to be much happier this year than they were.
     
  • Conner Weigman has an arm. The two guys we have backing him up can play as well. It’s a rarity to have guys like that. I watched the Texas Bowl when Jaylen Henderson got hurt, and Marcel Reed came in. To see him perform the way he did told me that we’re in good shape with the quarterback position. Weigman, with the offense from Collin Klein, can put up points. Weigman could be in the Heisman race. He has to stay healthy, but he has shown he can perform in big games.

made all decade team for his position in the nfl, how many players make the all decade team and are not in the hall of fame? no brainer put the big man in.

Great player great person. OTs of his caliber change a whole franchise.

Hopefully we can get back on track with that position.

One of the best, and a great guy off the field. Had a small sized class with him and got to know him a bit back in the day.

One of the top football players we've ever had. I'd put him up there with Jacob Green and the like, and seemingly just a real good dude, too, which is more important to me.
