Buzz Williams shines light on where A&M has to improve moving forward

Texas A&M dropped a frustrating home contest against Ole Miss on Saturday to move to 3-4 in the conference. The Aggies' head coach, Buzz Williams, joined Monday's edition on TexAgs Radio to discuss the loss to the Rebels and A&M's upcoming prep for Florida.

Key notes from Buzz Williams interview

  • Watching games on TV is a different style than watching as a typical fan. I think coaches probably look at things differently for a variety of reasons. Sometimes, they understand more. Sometimes, they understand less. I saw most of the Lions game last night, and I was cheering for coach Dan Campbell, as you know, and I hate how it all went down at the end.

  • Playing time and lineups are based on who they are, their skill set, how hard they work and how well they play together. Over our time here, it has been pretty consistent. It hasn't been very consistent this year, probably as inconsistent as it has been period. A lot of that is because of injuries and things we can't control.

  • I think Henry Coleman III is nearly 100 percent now. We’ve been trying to find some consistency and not just in the starting lineup. We had everyone there on Saturday, and they beat us. We started Jace Carter those last two games, Jace played more minutes Saturday than he had all year, and all his rebounds gave us a chance.

  • We are fine offensively, to be honest. You can always look at different things in one-possession games. The first thing is we’re going to be in a lot of one and two-possession games. We beat Kentucky and Missouri with both being a two-possession game, and we lost Saturday in a one-possession game, so it’s not just gonna be one category that you need to improve in.

  • We need to make a higher percentage of shots, our offense is ranked 30th in the country, and a lot of that is we offensive rebound and don't turn the ball over. We get fouled at a high rate. Saturday, we missed 10 free throws, and that’s something you can’t do in a one-possession game.

  • Do we want to shoot the ball better? Yes sir, we do. We’re gonna work on offense double tomorrow. Do we need to make free throws? Yes sir, we do. We shoot and make 100 free throws every day, for everyone in our program. Yes, it helps when the ball goes through the basket.

  • We’re going to have to hang in there and keep fighting because we have no choice but to do that. We have been forcing more turnovers, and that and defensive rebounding have helped our defense. We did not do that on Saturday. We just gotta continue to fight and continue to scratch and claw to improve in those areas we need to.

  • Our best offense is when we’re semi-in transition. The defense isn't set, and that's when I think other guys can have a shot created for them. We don’t turn the ball over, and we’re No. 1 in the country at getting defensive rebounds.

  • I thought Tyrece Radford had his best week of practice this week. I do think he’s back. He's moving faster and better than he has in a long time. Having him and Henry back is really good for our team.

  • We should never take Wade Taylor IV for granted. You’ve seen it so many times, and everyone has a different plan for him defensively. Everyone does something different. We’ve seen them all, so it’s more of a “They’re in this defense today. Let's go to this.” Wade is so comfortable with all that, and when he gets the defensive rebound. We feel very comfortable because he can initiate our offense.

  • We need to enjoy these times with Wade here, and I think Andersson Garcia is the same. He leads the SEC in rebounding. He’s comfortable with the ball.

  • Andy does all of the little things that help us win. I hate taking him off the floor. He helps us offensively and defensively. He and Wade create so much attention. Wade during the shot and Andersson on the glass, and it makes everyone around them better. Andy is a very special person and an extraordinarily rare player, and while he is here, we need to make sure we enjoy him.

Everywhere except for rebounding.

Did anyone ask why Solo was in the game for the last possession? While there aren't many options, it would have been nice to have as many "shooters" on the floor as possible.

The offense is NOT fine. Wade Taylor is fine. Anyone with 1 eye can see- no one else can consistently Score on this team. No one.

Just wanted to thank Texags for talking with Buzz and others like this. It's much better than a typical press conference. It's some of the best content on here.

Yes , we missed dome free throws and shooting % has not been good in losses, especially 3's but Defense is not like past years. Too many wide open 3's given up. Too many drives to the basket with no one helping out. This is not a Buzz Williams Defense. Looks like the SEC tournament will be our only route to the NCAA tourny.

In other words: "We better be ready to NIL or it's over".

We are fine offensively, to be honest.
I'd rather he not say stuff like this. Our half court offense is the worst it has been since he has been here. The reliance on jacking 3 pointers when you are a bad 3 point shooting team is not a fine offense.
Our effective FG% is 345 out of 351.
We are on pace to shoot our lowest 3 point percent and highest number of 3's since Buzz has been here.
Since Buzz has been here our shooting has not been good. If you cannot shoot then you need to rebound or run plays that result in higher percent shots. Our rebounding is all that is giving us a chance.
