On Friday's edition of TexAgs Radio, ESPN NFL & college football analyst, Herm Edwards, discussed his opinions on Jim Harbaugh to the Chargers and previewed the NFL conference championships. Edwards also offered his thoughts on the Cowboys and Texans.

Key notes from Herm Edwards interview

  • I think Jim Harbaugh is a great fit for the Chargers. He started in San Diego as a college coach and came back to the NFL. I think he’s going to a team that, when you look at them, they have a lot of talent. They have the piece that he needs which is the quarterback.

  • Justin Herbert has flashed at times, and the team has flashed at times, but when you look at their roster, you ask yourself the question every year why aren't they more competitive in that division? They should be right there with the Kansas City Chiefs trying to win that division. I think it's a good fit for him, so I think they got themselves a good coach.

  • All these head coaching jobs are starting to get taken. I don't know where the conversation is as far as going in and meeting with ownership, but Bill Belichick is a guy in the past who wanted a lot of control. I don't know if he still wants that, but that's the question everyone has been asking.

  • I don’t know whether Belichick doesn't feel comfortable going to a certain organization where they offered him the opportunity but didn't want to give him as much power in that organization, so it’ll be interesting. He only needs 15 more wins to pass Don Shula, so hopefully, he gets an opportunity to go somewhere and be the head coach so he can go get that record.

  • Patrick Mahomes is chasing Captain America, and Andy Reid is chasing Bill Belichick in terms of what they accomplished as an organization. They are on track to be that.

  • The Chiefs play well against playoff competition, and people wondered if he could play that well on the road, and he quieted everyone about that. For Baltimore, Lamar Jackson is 1-3 against Patrick Mahomes, and if you want to be in that conversation, this is a game Lamar needs to win.

  • Lamar’s at home, and he's playing a team where whoever wins is in the Super Bowl. Defensively for Baltimore, they are good enough. They have some players on that side of the ball. This is gonna be a fun game to watch.

  • Life is about the dips that you take and how you get out of those dips, and the Harbaugh family has always been able to stand in the face of it and continue to do what they do.

  • You think about the Harbaugh family, and it starts with the dad, a former coach. I’ve been close to the Harbaughs, and they are fantastic football coaches. Players play for them, and one has won a national championship, and the other one is trying to win a Super Bowl. Their dad always says a quote, “Who’s got it better than us?”

  • Dan Campbell understands the history in Detriot. He was a former player, and he was on the team that went 0-16, and has come back and breathed life into that organization and into that city.

  • The Detroit Lions are historically the team that has suffered and the city that has suffered, but boy, they are excited about playing football. They are physical and tough, and that translates to going on the road.

  • They got a quarterback who played right across the bridge at Cal. They’ve got a two-headed monster in David Montgomery and Jahmyr Gibbs, a great tight end in Sam Laporta and Amon-Ra St. Brown. We know what he can do. Josh Reynolds is the vertical guy. Aaron Glenn played for me with the Jets. One day, he’s going to be a head coach. Hopefully, it's sooner than later. Their defense has gotten better, so this team is going into San Francisco feeling like they can win.

  • Do you know how the Cowboys have that star on the side of their helmet? I wouldn’t allow them to put that star on that helmet. You need to earn it. When you become a Cowboys player, you already get pushed into the spotlight and already think you are a star. Well, you got to earn the star and play like that.

  • In big moments in the NFL Playoffs, they’ve fallen short. That has been their problem. We know they’re going to win 12 games, and they can blame coaching, but they’ve had a lot of different coaches and a lot of good players over the last 28 years. The result has always been the same when they get into the Playoffs. When the lights are bright, they need to show up in big games.

  • DeMeco Ryans was a former player in Houston, but he grew up in that San Fransicso 49ers organization and has modeled his team that way. They are a step away offensively. They got to run the ball better, and that’s what got them at the end.

  • They put so much on that young quarterback, and C.J. Stroud doesn’t turn the ball over. Once they get the run game going and take the pressure off the quarterback, they’re going to be good.
