Texas A&M women's golf coach Gerrod Chadwell joined Tuesday's edition of TexAgs Radio to provide an update on the state of the Aggies out on the links, who are preparing for a trip to the Puerto Rico Classic on Feb. 4-6 to open the spring portion of their schedule.

Key notes from Gerrod Chadwell interview

  • We're getting back into the swing of things. We've been in the gym religiously and started qualifying this week. We're headed to Puerto Rico soon, and we'll find out who will represent the Aggies in our first spring event.

  • The Puerto Rico event is a great field and allows us to take seven young ladies. I'm looking forward to getting that many rounds in. It'll be warm, so I'm looking forward to that. It's a great way to start the year. We get to stay on the property. It's a good way to start off the season.

  • I like being one-up on USC, and we won't see them for the rest of the spring. We saw them at East Lake. You never know what you're going to get in the second week of January, so I was ecstatic about what we saw there. USC is the national runner-up and got us at East Lake. We beat them 4-2 in San Diego last week. We'll see them in the postseason. It was fun to get some revenge on them.

  • It gives me chills to see three players invited to the Augusta National Women's Amateur. We had Cayetana Fernández García-Poggio and Jennie Park represent us there last year, but when we got here, nobody had represented A&M at that tournament. To have three is great. That's a big event. For some of these young ladies, that might be the pinnacle of women's amateur golf. I'm thrilled to see them go to that event.

  • When you have a group like we've had for the last three years, you saw that it was possible. It built quickly in our first year, and we rode that experience into the next season. We amassed a lot of trophies last year. We didn't bring home a trophy in the fall. We're getting into tougher events. Finishing top five or top three means you had a good week. Winning is hard. We're trying to beat 14 other teams in the same week. I don't want to judge our regular season on winning. I want to judge it on experience and getting us ready for the postseason.

  • The first year we were here, that national championship run was just addicting. You don't get revved up or spun up like that in the regular season. To win the SEC was amazing. We've been blessed. I hope 2024, 2025 and 2026 are big years for us as we turn this class over. I'm excited about who's coming in, so the signs look promising for us to continue this stretch.

  • We're judged based on wins and losses, and in the programs I've been part of, you miss the chance to get to know these impressive young ladies. They'll go on to represent this university in great fashion. In due time, we'll have the No. 1-ranked amateur on our team. That's wild to me for this university and our team. I encourage people to get to know our young ladies. We have a home regional this year, so it would be a great chance to come out in May to watch them.

  • February is a busy month. We start with Puerto Rico next week, and then we go to the Moon Invitational, which will be a new one for us. We'll play in Houston next month, too. We'll play in Tuscon in March, and we'll play Clemson, which should get us ready for the SEC Championships topography-wise.
