No. 21 A&M run-ruled at home as No. 17 Georgia completes sweep, 8-0

No. 21 Texas A&M softball dropped the final game of a home-opening Southeastern Conference series against No. 17 Georgia on Sunday as the Bulldogs run-ruled the Aggies to complete the sweep, 8-0.

“Obviously not a fun weekend for us,” A&M head coach Trisha Ford said. “We were excited to open up conference play here at Davis Diamond, and I thought the 12th Man was fantastic all weekend. I wish we put together some better outings.”

In the top of the second, Jaydyn Goodwin put Georgia on the scoreboard with a three-run blast off of Shaylee Ackerman.

The Aggie starter pitched two innings and tallied two strikeouts, giving up one walk, three hits and three runs. Junior Grace Uribe made her first outing of the season in the circle, relieving Ackerman in the third.

In the top of the sixth, Jaiden Fields added to Georgia’s lead and sent a ball over the right field wall. A double from Lyndi Rae Davis forced Ford to pull Uribe, replacing her with Emily Leavitt.

“I thought Grace (Uribe) did a really good job for not having thrown quite yet,” Ford said. “She had already gone through the lineup once, so it was to bring Emily (Leavitt) in and close. We’re getting work in. This is better than a bullpen.”

Leavitt was not able to contain the Bulldogs, either.

After a Riley Valentine error, the visitors had runners on second and third. Goodwin crushed a two-RBI double to left to make it 8-0.

The Aggies were unable to produce offensively after the Bulldogs blew the game open in the sixth. With a strikeout from Trinity Cannon, the game was called after six innings.

“We’ve got to turn the page. That’s going to be huge,” Ford said. “We can’t dwell on this, but I want us to learn from it.”

The Aggies will face Louisiana Tech on Wednesday. First pitch is set for 6 p.m. CT.
