Texas A&M Football
* Murray gave the players tons of confidence and he would always keep a positive message on the field, no matter the circumstances.
* Back then, A&M wasn’t afraid to throw the ball around a bit which wasn’t normal for the college game at the time. When you have a player throw for 290 or 300 yards back then, it was a big deal. He was privileged to coach many great quarterbacks during his career and thinks he was lucky to have coached quarterbacks like Gary Kubiak, Murray and Bucky Richardson while at A&M.
* In 1985, A&M was a complete team on all three sides of the ball. Against Auburn in the 1986 Cotton Bowl, the defense was spectacular, but the offense does not need to be forgotten. In that game A&M was able to use the tight end position effectively and it led the offense to great success.
* One thing he wants people to understand and look at is how Murray was able to get better each year and how productive he was on the field. Murray was able to win tons of game which cements his spot as one of, if not the greatest, A&M quarterbacks of all-time. If he wouldn’t have been injured, he could have been great in the NFL as well.
* Before it’s all over, there will be quite a few more Aggies from the teams that played in the 1986-1988 Cotton Bowls in the Cotton Bowl Hall of Fame. Those teams stood out and played against some great teams. He believes that he could have done a better job of getting Murray healthy before the Ohio State game in 1987.
* He believes that Murray was able to get the defensive coordinator at Arkansas fired because of the way he was able to tear apart their defense.
* He was fortunate to come by practice the other day and talk with Coach Sumlin for a bit. He is really impressed by the way that the high school coaches admire the way Sumlin conducts himself. 99 percent of the time, if you’re going to recruit in Texas and be successful, you are going to need the high school coaches on your side. The thing the coaches love about Sumlin is that he normally comes in by himself and is always genuine with them.
* He knows that A&M needs to settle on a quarterback and believes that Christine Michael will be just as good as any running back in the SEC. He didn’t get a good feel for the receivers and believes the defensive linemen are getting better. The one thing A&M needs though is speed on the defensive side of the ball because it’s an absolute necessity to play in the SEC.
Jackie Sherrill praises Kevin Murray on day of HOF induction
Notes from Jackie Sherrill interview
* No one has ever seen Kevin Murray emotional, but today he thinks that Murray might crack a little today. Murray was way ahead of his time and was a great athlete. He was actually drafted in high school to play baseball, but no one told him he was going to be put on a bus and be treated like someone in grade school. That was probably the biggest reason he came to A&M because he didn’t enjoy the travels of baseball.* Murray gave the players tons of confidence and he would always keep a positive message on the field, no matter the circumstances.
