Our QB1 Stephen McGee trying to find optimism heading into Week 3

Saturday's loss to App State was a rough one, but former Texas A&M quarterback Stephen McGee is here to remind us that it's never as bad as you think it is. On Thursday's edition of TexAgs Radio, McGee shared why he's optimistic heading into this week's Miami game.

Key notes from Stephen McGee interview

  • It's always good to see you guys in person. It's different. You get the off-air conversations, and you get to see how OB is dressed. He always has it on lock. Olin is the king of dad jokes. I'm in this new phase of life where I am trying to mix those in so I can embarrass my daughter one day.

  • You can only be more optimistic because it can't get any lower. It was a huge step back for the football program on the field and off. Texas had a good day, and you saw Rueben Owens‍ dissing A&M. There are so many other areas this will impact like fundraising and stuff like that. If you have any guys over there that have pride in what they do and wanting to win; if you love the game, you're pissed off. There is nothing better than a bunch of pissed-off guys. I'm excited about what we're going to see this week, and I think you'll see a different football team. If you don't, that's a real cause of concern, and that would be disturbing as a former player and a fan.

  • I would change the quarterback, and that's not a knock on Haynes King. Everything starts at that position. You can criticize all the other positions, but nobody is going to claim you should bench the left guard. Quarterback is the most important position in sports. Guys around you will make mistakes, but I don't think the quarterback play we've seen through the last two weeks is going to allow us to be the football team we want to be.

  • I had to approach those teams cautiously because we weren't as talented as many of the teams we played back then. We had to win with ball control, and that was our DNA. Eventually, you'd play a Texas Tech that could put so many points on the board.

  • We're talking about nine of 11 guys doing their job on every play. You have to get team football, and it's about the team. Like Appalachian State, it's not about the most talented football team. It's about the best football team, and sometimes the best football team has a bunch of guys that don't have many stars by their name.

  • Block out the distractions. They shouldn't be on their phones or worried about NIL dollars right now. That comes after you're a good football player and after you win. To win, you have to have great preparation and practice.

  • That's Bullcrap: The obvious bullcrap is that you lose at home to Appalachian State, but to take it a step further: The world is not going to end. It's never as good or as bad as you think it is. I think it's bullcrap to say that Texas A&M’s program is "over" or "done" after this loss. Just because we lose one bad football game, I'm not ready to get rid of all of the players or Jimbo Fisher just yet.

  • Buy: Fadil Diggs. I still like him.

  • Sell: The tight end position and/or offensive line. Devon Achane is arguably the best football player on the team, but we haven't really been able to see him. We have to get him some space. In the run game, they haven't been a cohesive unit up front. We have to find something up front.

  • Lease: Demani Richardson. The fourth-year guy has been flashing it every week. He is playing fast. I’ve always thought of him as an in-the-box defender. Is he a liability in the passing game? We don't know yet, but we're going to see when they play better quarterbacks. Still, I love his energy and leadership. Richardson is a good kid.
