Aggie soccer head coach G Guerrieri discusses solid start to 2022 season
Following Texas A&M's eight-goal rout of McNeese to open up the 2022 season at Ellis Field, head coach G Guerrieri joined David Nuño on TexAgs Radio to share his insight into the Aggies' early offensive outburst and the two-match week on tap.
Key notes from G Guerrieri interview
- We're trying to get people in College Station to show up before the game kicks off cause you may miss a lot. At the 1:47 mark, we were up 2-0.
- We went on the road and played a ranked, veteran Clemson team. Clemson moved up from #25 to #18 in the rankings for that game for tying us. We took care of business on Sunday against McNeese. We've got some wind in our sails.
- It’s Kenna Caldwell’s fourth year, and she will come back next year using her COVID-19 year. He's very mature. They could hear her exclamations up in the press box. She's developed as quite the leader.
- Last year, we fielded a team that was 18 years old. This year, we were one year older and wiser. They can get back out there and prove what happened last year is behind us.
- Mia Pante played in the U-20 World Cup for Canada. She just got back and was instrumental in several goals. She is so natural in the flow of the game.
- We didn't change roles against McNeese, but we adjusted the midfield a little. The McNeese coach is an Aggie. I told him he was the last guy I would run up the score on, but that was my entire second string out there. We've played them in the postseason. We play a home game tomorrow night against Sam Houston State. It’s a highway 30 Derby.
- We turn around and have our Fish Camp game against New Mexico State. I expect a rowdy environment on Saturday night.
- Our entire freshmen class has been on campus since January. This time last year, we were figuring out where the pieces were going to go and then injuries happened, and we had to reshuffle the deck. It's a different group. You can see it in the way we attack.
- There are going to be spaces. It's just like basketball. You get the ball to the big guy. That’s the center in soccer. If the center is clogged, you find another way. Georgia Leb had a hammer from about 30 yards. All the others were from about seven yards.
- I wanna see improvement. I want Sam Houston to play at our speed. I want to play against a lot of players because we have to play again in 48 hours. This year, there's no overtime. If you come out there and pour it on early, it’s over.
