Notes from Richmond Webb Interview

* Still waiting on the Hall of Fame call to come through. Had a good friend in Cortez Kennedy get in this year and hopes he can get in soon too. Also a friend of Willie Roaf who made it in this year as well. Met Roaf right before he was drafted so he has known him for years and has no problem that another great offensive tackle who played at the same time as him got in before him.

* Currently is partnered with former Aggie football player Dana Batiste in a storm water company. They do anything from rebuilds to selling parts and have a couple of contracts with the city of Houston.

* Also working with Steve Solari in the public speaking group Promentum. He is really looking forward to shining up his public speaking skills and talking in front of either a corporate event or any other possible speaking event. Still in training but is very excited about everything Promentum has to offer.

* Highly recruited out of Dallas Roosevelt as a defensive player in 1985. Coach Sherill was the head coach and Coach Slocum was his recruiting coach and he was told that he could get significant playing time early because Ray Childress had just left for the NFL. He had a great time visiting campus and decided A&M was the place for him. Was in school with Aaron Wallace since the third grade and signed in the same class with him as well. During two-a-days they had moved a couple of linebackers who had gotten too big down to the defensive line so he ended up pretty deep on the depth chart. The coaches noticed he could play offensive line as well so they ended up moving him to the other side of the ball and things worked out very well. Coach Paul Register was the one to break the news to him that he was going to be switching to offense and he was disappointed at first. He then realized that he wanted to be on the field more than anything and offense was how he was going to get there.

* One thing that sticks out about his career in Aggieland is that in the five years he was on campus, they never lost to Texas. A&M also went to three southwest conference championships during his time. The A&M program was getting positioned to make a national championship run during that time and the time immediately after he left. The team was so deep at every position that no one wanted to get hurt for fear of getting lost in the shuffle. It raised everyone’s level of play because you knew that the guy behind you was just as good and you couldn’t afford to mess up.

* Came back for the 25th anniversary reunion of winning the Southwest Conference during the Missouri game this past season. Watched the majority of the games on television but loves when he has the chance to come back and see the guys he once played with.

* Thinks the hire of Coach Kevin Sumlin was a great one. Looking at how he was able to turn the University of Houston program around alone shows how great of a coach he is. For him to take the talent level there to a nearly undefeated season was spectacular.

* Played three or four seasons with Hunter Goodwin in Miami. He also played with a slew of other Aggies throughout the years. People told him that he needed to meet Hunter and from the time they met, their friendship took off. Hunter is the type of friend who is very loyal and will defend you until the end. Hunter’s foundation comes from his family and the good upbringing he had. Remembers Hunter driving around in a green F-250 and being smart with his playing money and he is reaping the benefits of that now.

* Coach Sumlin did his homework when he decided to hire fellow Aggie Terry Price as the new defensive line coach.  Thinks it will be beneficial to A&M that Price has so much SEC experience and he knows what it will take as far as recruiting goes to compete at the highest level. Played with Price for four years at A&M and then one year in Miami. Has nothing but respect for Price and admires the longevity he has had as a coach. Remembers practicing against him and seeing him drive around in his light beige Nissan 200. Wants the current A&M team to get back to being as close knit and family like as the team was back when he played because he thinks it would be beneficial to the program.

* There is so much good high school football being played in the Dallas area and it’s important to be able to recruit that area well. The key to being able to recruit the area well is having a recruiter who knows the area and has connections within the other high school coaches. Thinks that David Beaty will do a good job recruiting that area and is excited to see what comes of the current recruiting efforts. Building up relationships with high schools through players on campus is important too. If you have someone on the team that can speak to an up-and-coming junior or senior and have then talk A&M up, it can do great things for recruiting as well.

* Played one year with current strength coach Larry Jackson while at A&M. He is a quiet easy going guy off the field, but when he’s on the field he is a completely different person. The thing that will really help the team is that he is someone the players can relate to, but at the same time he is going to demand everything out of them when they step into the weight room.

* Moving to the SEC is going to be tough but after a few years, Sumlin will have a hold of things and will have this program doing well. With the recruiting going the way it is, the team will do just fine. Thinks this is a great time to get out of Texas’ shadow and brand A&M as its own thing separate from any other school in the state. To be the best, you have to play the best and he is looking forward to seeing what the SEC has to hold for A&M.
