Super Von: Charean highlights Miller's return to football's biggest stage
During Tuesday's edition of TexAgs Radio, NFL Hall of Fame writer Charean Williams joined to share her thoughts on the latest news and notes from around football, including Aggie Von Miller's return to the Super Bowl.
Key notes from Charean Williams interview
- It looks like Tom Brady just announced his retirement, so we do have news. That extra $15 million is money already earned. It was a signing bonus that was deferred. He will get paid that money on Friday, and the story that he wouldn’t was not true. The Bucs can ask for $16 million back. What most teams do is say, "It's your money. Keep it. We don't want it back." The Lions asked for money back from Calvin Johnson, and that's what created that rift that they’re trying to mend now that he’s in the Hall of Fame. I bet the Bucs let Brady keep that money as a going-away gift and a “thank you” for winning that Super Bowl.
- It sounds like Gisele pushed Brady to retire, saying 22 years enough. He didn't want the going-away tour. It makes me think this was the plan all along because he didn't want to go out on a farewell tour.
- I would never rule out a return with Brady. He could come back and play again because he stays in such great shape. The Bucs will still own his rights unless he can get them to cut him now. Tony Romo did that when he left the Cowboys as opposed to putting him on the retired list.
- It does look like Mike Evans will have somebody else throwing him touchdown passes, which is unfortunate for Mike. Hopefully, they get someone in there that is good and can quickly figure out that you just have to throw it up to Evans. Oh, and by the way, Evans is now going to the Pro Bowl.
- All the good young quarterbacks are all in the AFC, which is interesting when you think about Aaron Rodgers possibly leaving Green Bay. He has pointed at Denver, but it doesn't make any sense to leave the NFC North with Detroit, Minnesota and Chicago. Now with Brady gone, the NFC South doesn't look very good either. It's a much easier route to the Super Bowl through the NFC. It may be a down period of college quarterbacks, but there are so many good young quarterbacks in this league that it will be fun to watch how these guys develop.
- If I'm Tampa Bay, I'd certainly look towards Rdogers because they have the pieces of a Super Bowl team. If I'm the Packers and Rodgers wants out, I'd trade him to the AFC because I don't want him competing against my team. I think Rodgers is crazy if he wants out of Green Bay because of the team around him. We've seen the Packers do it in the regular season, but they haven't done it in the postseason. If I'm Aaron Rodgers, I'm staying in Green Bay. I'm not going anywhere else, especially not the AFC.
- In the NFC, look at Matthew Stafford, Dak Prescott, Kyler Murray and Russell Wilson, but even Wilson could leave Seattle. Deshaun Watson could be on the move as well. Which NFC quarterback would you start your team with? That's an interesting question. It's either Stafford, Prescott or Murray. I guess it would be Kyler, but he hasn't shown you that he can do it in the postseason. Neither has Prescott.
- Von Miller is still capable of doing what he has always done when he's healthy. He has had a great year. He has looked like the old Von. He had an impact on Sunday, and you've seen that all postseason. He becomes a free agent this offseason, and I think he will be highly paid. Maybe not by the Rams because I'm not sure they can afford him unless he takes a hometown discount. He can go somewhere for a really big contract, and a lot of teams will be interested in him. He will be the top pass-rusher on the market. The question with him is how long you want to extend that contract out based on his injuries. He is going to get paid because he has looked very good late in the season and in the postseason.
- I think I'll pick the Rams to win the Super Bowl, but I hope it will be a good game because it has been a really good playoff. Other than the Super Wild Card Weekend, we had the best weekend in playoff history with the divisional round. Then the conference championships were really good games. I'll go with the Rams to win it all. They have so much talent, and they've been here before. I leave for Los Angeles on Sunday, so I'm excited to be out there. It will be fun to have the Bengals out there because they haven't been there in a long time.
- Joe Burrow shows you the value of having a good quarterback that can lead you to places you never thought you'd go, and you go in a hurry. They were the worst team in the NFL just two years ago. That's how quickly things can happen with a really good quarterback.
