Burns: It's a 'no-brainer' for Jimbo Fisher to stay at Texas A&M

Key notes from Peter Burns interview

  • We think certain things going into the season, and then suddenly, we have these knee-jerk reactions. We thought Georgia was going to be pretty good, and they are. We thought that Alabama was going to be good, but we had that knee-jerk reaction after the Texas A&M game. They're still pretty good, but A&M was left for dead coming in, remember?

  • You saw how Derek Mason has turned that Auburn defense into a game-changer. You think about this A&M-Auburn game differently than we did three weeks ago. These teams have gotten better. Bryan Harsin was an off-the-radar hire, but that locker room loves him. That team adopted him, and he has them rolling. Honestly, that's where College Gameday should be, but they decided to go to Cincinnati.

  • We've gotten punch-drunk on these teams that are good from the job. It happened with LSU in 2019. It happened with Alabama in 2020. We lose sight of the teams that get better as the season goes on, and Jimbo Fisher's has the propensity to adapt, adjust and improve week by week.

  • I don't know how LSU doesn't zero in on Mel Tucker after you understand that Jimbo Fisher is out of play. When people ask me who I want, I think about how great the LSU program is that could snap their fingers and get anybody. How many no-brainers are there? Dabo Swinney and Lincoln Riley aren't coming. Outside of Jimbo Fisher, who has the track record? They haven't had a guy that can put it on cruise control and let the LSU talent take over since Nick Saban left.

  • I look at Dabo as a guy who took Clemson to the promised land. He will have a statue outside of that stadium.

  • Jimbo Fisher can build his own legacy at Texas A&M. The program is cutting edge. You have all of the money you need. It's in a recruiting-rich area. Why not continue to build something great in College Station that is your own?

  • There are still a lot of landmines surrounding LSU football and LSU athletics right now. I don't see any of that in College Station. It's a no-brainer to stay at Texas A&M if I'm Jimbo Fisher.

The most obvious one is LSU… the team the sips played was not the same team we played, or Clemson played.

Teams get better as the season goes on as long as they don't have big time injuries.

I have seen alot of teams stagnate without injuries. I dont remember many Fran teams getting better as the season progressed. The 2006 team got up and beat tu, but then lost the Holiday Bowl badly. I dont remember many RC teams getting better into the season, either.

Agree. I've followed A&M for 30 years, and Jimbo is the first who 1) Doesn't get out coached at half time and 2) has teams that get better as the season goes on. I don't know if he will win us a natty, but those two things along with recruiting and off field judgment are about the best indicators I can think of for a Head Coach's success.

Yep, Jimbo's teams get better as the game goes on, they get better as the season goes on, and they get better as the years go on. Not every game, not every season, not every year.... but generally true. And that's enough!

The only coach I have seen make his teams better as they go through the season was Jackie Sherrill. Now, I see the same thing in Jimbo.........However, this season turns out, I want Jimbo to remain the coach for a long time.
