Jackie Sherrill discusses importance of the spring game for a program

Ahead of Saturday's spring game at Kyle Field, former Texas A&M head football coach Jackie Sherrill joined TexAgs Radio to offer his opinion on what you can learn from a spring game as a coach, and what he expects from Jimbo Fisher & Co. during the 2021 season.

Key notes from Jackie Sherrill interview

  • I think the spring game is an important piece of your program's schedule. It's an opportunity to go out there and perform in front of fans and see how guys play.

  • Jimbo Fisher has done a great job of changing the culture at Texas A&M. There is no reason Texas A&M shouldn't be one of the top programs in the country. He's done a great job of not only in bringing in top-end talent but also developing them into great players.

  • I certainly believe Texas A&M has the foundation for having the top defensive in the country. I think the key is finding someone to replace Buddy Johnson. He was so good last season. If they can do that, I can definitely see the Aggies being one of the top defenses in the country in 2021.

  • The hardest position to replace on defense is a cornerback. It is such a technically dominant position that it takes time for those guys to adapt to the game at the college level. Almost every guy out there has great speed, but not everyone has the hip flexibility and technique to stay with elite pass catchers.

I was a freshman at A&M in Jackie's second year. He brought an attitude of winning and set a bar of excellence in our players that gave them the confidence to believe that they could win every game.

I feel the same way now with Jimbo.

" It is clearer now than it was then to the men involved just what the deal would cost Texas A&M, not only in dollars and cents but in reputation. The episode nearly cost the university its new president, it humiliated then-head coach Tom Wilson, it outraged faculty members, alumni and students, and it exposed A&M to the rest of the country as an institution seemingly willing to pay any price for a national championship in football."

Yes we wanted a national championship, but as i remember the feeling, it was the anticipation of getting past t.u. Houston Ark etcc to win a conf and cotton bowl- mich the same now as getting past bama to sec chship. difference is, getting past bama almost means winning a NC.

You need to read the book by Jackie "No Experience Required", if you have not. If you have, you'd have clear understanding of the complete disdain the national media had for Texas A&M for making that deal with Coach Sherrill. Read the articles. We were supposed to "know our place" as a little brother to t.u. and accept a victory now and then, and if we were reeeealll lucky maybe win the SWC...once in a while if t.u. didn't. Oh, lest we not forget SMU, the love child of the DMN. The Media had their chosen ones, and Jackie was a rising star who would have taken over for one of them, but Texas A&M knew we were better than a shadow program to t.u. and SMU, and put our $$$ where everyone else did, and it upset the apple cart, eventually. They tried to make our decision a laughing stock after Jackie did not excel in after the third year, and wrote pointedly about who and what we were "supposed to be". But after that, we started becoming a threat, soon to be a force in the SWC, and wrecking t.u.'s place as the heir and king.

t.u. has never been the same, and it has been good for Texas Football as a State. When t.u. is dominate, the other universities suffer. When Texas A&M is good/great, the other universities save t.u., improve in status as well. A&M, realizing they can be better than t.u. (although will never be "loved" by the MSM as much) moved on to better pastures than the Big12-? Dumpster Fire that was basically run by t.u. Thank goodness. We moved on because t.u. was an oppressive force with the backing of the Big 12 Commissioner to assure their dominance. OU would have left as well, but were chained by OSU. Texas A&M was granted the open date of choice (Thanksgiving) to continue the football rivalry, but t.u. declined to play Texas A&M in ALL sports out of spite. Now, the MSM sports writers blame Texas A&M for not continuing the rivalry. The same group that chastised us for hiring Jackie. Think about that. They do NOT like the fact that Texas A&M has shown up t.u. in college football. Not one bit.

t.u. has made the bed they currently lie in, and OU is the master of the conference they were set to rule. It is glorious. We don't need to revive a scintilla of that "rivalry" as it only gives t.u. relevance to power college football. They cannot escape OU's shadow and are looking for any kind of pressure relief, and a lucky win gives it to them. Let them suffocate from the sins of their past. No need to help the victim of their own bad decisions and efforts. It is like a crime scene where those that reach to help become targets of the Mob.

We have escaped that Dumpster Fire, and there is no need to get singed from it. Furthermore, those back in the 80's that called us out for trying to escape the chains we were supposed to live in, can kiss our Aggie Ass. We will not be placed in a box. As Aggies we intend to win it all, and if we cannot, will wreck their hierarchy in the attempt to reach our goal, with all of these activities taking place on the field of play.

I get sick and tired of "we don't need a Cinderella Story to win the CFP, we need brand names" <--heard on ESPNU in the morning show. Boys, they don't want us in the party. They did not want Clemson either (remember "Clemsnoning"). Clemson FORCED them to take them. That is the only way Texas A&M will be accepted into the club.

So, with Jimbo's help, hopefully we can knock the door off the hinges, step up the the bar, and buy a round for the club to announce our presence.
