Sharing the rock leads Texas A&M to victory over UTRGV as Aggies start 3-0
From the moment Buzz Williams stepped on campus at Texas A&M, he has preached the concept of team and how it takes everyone in the program doing their job to be successful.
The Ags’ 81-68 win over UT Rio Grande Valley was certainly a balanced team effort.
The Texas A&M bench scored 26 of the Aggies’ 43 first-half points, with Emanuel Miller accounting for 13 points and four rebounds to lead the team.
One of the reasons for a successful team effort is the unselfishness of each player on the court.
The Maroon & White assisted on nine of its 14 made field goals in the first 20 minutes of play and broke open a 15-4 scoring run with two big threes coming as Savion Flagg made the extra pass to get his teammates' wide-open shots.
The second half was a more back-and-forth game between the Aggies and Vaqueros as both teams settled into the flow of the game.
UTRGV made a couple of runs to cut the lead below double digits in the second half, but Texas A&M stayed true to its first-half form of sharing the basketball and relying on everyone to get the victory.
The Aggies ended the game with 41 points off the bench and a total of 14 assists on 26 made field goals.
In fact, of the eleven players who saw action, 10 scored a point. That has everything to do with Buzz’s consistent preaching of sharing the basketball.
That consistent coaching has been heard and understood by no one more than Savion Flagg.
Flagg’s leadership and knowledge of where his teammates are on the court has developed tremendously, and it has shown in the stat sheet. Tonight, the senior from Alvin, Texas, led the team in assists with seven and just one turnover as the Aggies have started the 2020-2021 season with three straight wins.
The Aggies’ next match-up will come against Big 12 opponent TCU on December 12 in Fort Worth.
