Key notes from Jake Hubenak interview

  • I got married in December, and my wife has said that this is not what she signed up for, having to be around me every day. We work at the same high school, and now we're stuck in the house with each other. We're finding things to do. I've been playing a lot of golf these days and getting better at my game. It's not too bad to this point.

  • This has been a difficult situation because, at least in college, all the players have the resources at their disposal to continue to train and work out. In high school, they don't have access to the gyms and the nutrition opportunities that collegiate athletes do. We have had great leadership at our school, with our coaches adjusting to what is going on. We have continued to do online workouts at 11:00 a.m., and because of the decisions, we are waiting on. Things can change very quickly.

  • Typically, our staff will meet on the weekends after games to go over our game plan for the next week. Now, we're wondering if that is even necessary now as a result because we can meet online and everything like that. It's crazy how this could change how we operate daily.

  • I think we would love to start on time, but everyone is in the same boat in regards to starting the season. We are all waiting to hear what is going to happen. We just have to make the best of it and know that when it is time to get started with practice, we'll be ready. We're all dealing with the circumstances. From high school up to the NFL, we're all in a wait-and-see mode and itching to get back on the field.

  • As someone who has been an Aggie fan my whole life, I remember when I left. Jimbo came in right behind me. I still knew a ton of guys on the team. I knew when Jimbo came in that these guys were going to be experiencing some good football. Seeing the guys that Jimbo has brought in, looking at who is coming back for A&M, and looking at the schedule, it is lining up to be a great season in 2020.

  • With all of the uncertainty surrounding other teams, it makes me excited about what could come from this team when they get back on the field. A&M has an advantage with the players it has returning over other teams that are breaking in new quarterbacks and head coaches. Other programs are trying to implement systems over the computer and create a culture when they can't even meet with their players.

  • The concern for me the past few seasons has been the defensive backfield. You look at the Alabama and LSU teams and see that they have always had those shutdown corners that take away large amounts of your passing game. I think A&M is getting close to fielding a defense with a great secondary, but they are still a few steps away. Right now, I think the offensive line is the concern for this A&M team. They need to get better and prove they can do it, and if they do get it the right way, they can excel this team to new heights.
