Key notes from Lyn Scarbrough interview

  • I think there is some optimism that we're going to play this fall, but there is some uncertainty with how they're going to do it.

  • Johnny Manziel is my #1 face of the program. He's the Heisman Trophy winner, and more people know about him than they do of my #2, John David Crow. Crow's stats don't come into the top ten of anything because they didn't play the same number of games. It's so hard to compare eras.

  • I thought about Charlie Kruger, Johnny Holland, and Lester Hayes being in my top three. I thought about Sam Adams and Myles Garrett. Mike Evans is one of my all-time favorite players to cover. I voted for him for the Biliknikoff award. However, at #3, I took Von Miller. Both in college and the pros, Von has been incredible.

  • I had Dat Nguyen on my list, but I just couldn't fit him into my top three.

  • I took RC Slocum as my football coach. You could've gone in several ways. He has both the longevity and the record. He won four conference titles. My second choice would've been Dana Bible. I didn't know Bible left A&M for Texas. I just went by the numbers. Bible is second in all-time record at A&M behind Slocum, and he won five Southwest Conference championships. Slocum's winning percentage is up there with the greatest coaches in the SEC - the Bear Bryants and the Bobby Dodds that people in the south talk about so much.

  • Jimbo would have to be here for a while and go on to beat RC Slocum's numbers to overtake him.

  • My non-football player is a basketball player: E. King Gill. He was an athlete. Next time I'm out here, make sure I see the statue of him on campus. The whole reason I took him is because of the tradition he started. Sports Illustrated rated the top traditions in college football not too long ago. Texas A&M was on there because of the 12th Man. If you're going to talk about the 12th Man, you've got to talk about the original, and that was Gill. I read about him, and it's a great story.

  • I remember Randy Matson as the Olympic shot putter. I didn't realize that he did all of these other things at A&M. I remember when he set the world record in the shot put. I was in college when he did that.

D X Bible left A&M after the 1928 season for Nebraska and coached there for 8 years, and won 6 conference titles.

He left Nebraska after the 1936 season for Texas and coached there for 10 years, 1937-1946, winning 3 SWC titles.
