Attrition can be an attraction. There can be addition by subtraction, especially if rivals are suffering significant losses.

Attrition is a major part of college football. Every year, players exit teams via completion of eligibility, early entry to the NFL draft, graduate transfer or the transfer portal.

Some teams seem to have immunity to attrition (see Alabama, Oklahoma, Clemson and Ohio State).

Others are forced into submission by attrition. For example, South Carolina was 11-2 in 2013.
