Key notes from Hugh McElroy interview

  • If anyone has ever heard me speak and tell my story, part of that is I did not start in high school. That’s because of Cliff Branch. His sister sent out a message Saturday afternoon and I figured out that he had passed. I’ve heard all around the NFL, that it is going to be a travesty if he doesn’t make the hall of fame.

  • I see more than eight wins with the 2019 Texas A&M Football team. I think I see nine. A few shows ago, one of the questions you guys asked was, “which game of the ‘Big Four’ do you think is the most winnable?” I think it’s Clemson. It’s the first of the big ones, and it has a lot to do with mindset. I think if we beat Clemson, that won’t be the only one of the four big games that Texas A&M wins. We got attention last year in that very close loss, but if we beat them this year, then you beat the national champion.

  • Texas A&M is holding the cards this year, and that’s what Jimbo was talking about. While everyone sees a tough schedule, it’s also a great opportunity. And he’s not just saying that; he believes it.

  • The leadership is coming from the sophomores and juniors this year, so imagine what that will say about them next year. If you’re getting that kind of underclassmen leadership now, it will be great next year when those guys are one year older, and the recruiting class comes in.

  • I think the running game, even without Trayveon, will be one of the most productive parts of our offense. I think the center position will be a big part of it. If we can have about 80% of the protection that Erik McCoy gave us last year, I think the running game will be just as good. In fact, it will probably even be better.

  • At the receiving positions, don’t forget Corbin. He’s got great hands, and he may be a lot like Trayveon. At the wideouts, we have potential. With Kendrick Rodgers, if he can turn his big-time moments into consistent moments, it will go a long way. Quartney Davis is also going to be great. The receiving position could be excellent this year. Texas A&M’s best receiver is probably Quartney Davis. I could make an argument for Rodgers or Buckley, but I’ll go with Davis.

  • I think we have to find a way to get Ainias Smith on the field, whether it’s in the return game or something. He’s a keeper.

  • You add Kellen into all of this with one more year of experience, making better decisions, the offensive line giving him a little more time, I think this offense could be really good.

Agree. I think Q Davis' confidence level is sky high, matched by his skills and athleticism. This will translate to the most consistent WR.

Corbin is going to be one of our all time best RBs by the time he leaves.

Hugh should be on the show more often. Hugh has good takes on Aggie Football.
