Former A&M & MSU head coach Jackie Sherrill analyzes Saturday's contest
Key notes from Jackie Sherrill interview
- The consistency is the biggest thing I've seen from A&M under Fisher. There is no doubt that they will continue to improve, but you have to be excited about how consistent this A&M team has been. I certainly thought Nick Starkel would be the starter after spring practice, so to see how Kellen Mond has improved drastically is incredible. Jimbo has been developing his strengths and you have to tip your hat to that.
- It’s very simple with quarterbacks. They can either get rid of the ball on time or their late. Nick Fitzgerald has been late on throws all year, which means he is throwing behind receivers or it is being picked off. Sometimes getting too far inside your head can destroy you as a quarterback.
- If you don’t have the depth in the defensive line then you are going to run out of gas. Back in our day, we played two different defensive lines that alternated series, and we changed from a three man front to a four man front. We used to confuse offenses. I remember one time we made (Steve) Spurrier punt and it was 4th and 59.
- Any time you take over for a really successful program, you are better off as a coach coming in. I want to come into a situation with solid players. Any time you change, though, there are adjustments. The coaches get the credit for changing a team, but it’s the players who actually change the game. I think you're seeing some of that adjustment right now in Starkville.
