Key notes from Around Aggieland

FOOTBALL

Texas A&M freshman placekicker Seth Small, who had four field goals and two extra points against South Carolina, was named a Lou Groza Award Star of the Week.

Both Braden Mann and Jace Sternberger were named Midseason All-Americans by multiple outlets Monday. The duo was honored by ESPN.com, while Mann also captured the honor from The Sporting News. Sternberger was also named an honorable mention for the Mackey Award and named the Earl Campbell Tyler Rose Award Player of the Week; Mond earned honorable mention.

Additionally, Jimbo Fisher was named to the Paul "Bear" Bryant Coach of the Year Watch List.

VOLLEYBALL

Junior outside hitter Hollann Hans was named the SEC Offensive Player of the Week, and middle blocker London Austin-Roark was tabbed SEC Freshman of the Week.

Texas A&M (12-7, 5-2 SEC) begins a three-match homestand against Tennessee tonight as the Aggies host their annual "Dig Pink" match. The Aggies will host No. 15 Kentucky on Sunday, who is undefeated in SEC play.

SOCCER

After a 2-1 win against No. 23 Mississippi State, forwards Ally Watt and Asdis Halldirsdottir were honored as the SEC Offensive Player of the Week and Freshman of the Week.

Last night, the No. 5 Texas A&M Aggies yielded a 79th minute goal and dropped a 1-0 decision to the Alabama Crimson Tide at the Alabama Soccer Stadium. The Aggies wrap up their 2018 regular-season home schedule Sunday when they host the Tennessee Volunteers at Ellis Field at 4:05 pm.

BASEBALL

Tomorrow, over 60 former A&M baseball players will meet on Olsen Field for the Former Players Home Run Derby & Game. The Home Run Derby is slated to begin at 10:30 a.m. and the Former Players Game is scheduled for 1 p.m.

TENNIS

Several of the top NCAA Division I women's tennis players in Texas are in College Station this weekend to compete in the ITA Texas Regional Championships. Texas A&M had an impressive first day, going a combined 10-1 in doubles and singles.

The men’s tennis team will have eight singles players and four doubles teams at the Texas Men's Regional Championships in Waco, which starts today.

WOMEN’S BASKETBALL

Chennedy Carter, who was last year’s unanimous National Freshman of the Year, was selected to the 2019 All-SEC Women's Basketball Preseason team and garnered votes for the Preseason Player of the Year.

GOLF

Texas A&M women's golf tees off this morning at the Betsy Rawls Invitational at the University of Texas Golf Club. The tournament features four ranked teams, including three in the top 10.

The No. 6 A&M men's golf team looks to continue their success in the last tournament of the fall season this week at The Golf Club of Georgia Collegiate Invitational. 2017-18 All Americans Chandler Phillips and Brandon Smith lead the Aggies' lineup for the 54-hole event, joined by Sam Bennett, Walker Lee, and Reese Ramsey.

SWIMMING AND DIVING

Last weekend, the No. 5 Aggie swimming and diving team opened their dual-meet season at No. 17 Ohio State. Junior Sydney Pickrem was named the Co-SEC Women's Swimmer of the Week after four individual and two relay wins in last weekend’s tournament.

This week, four Aggie swimmers, Lisa Bratton, Joria Caneta, Claire Rasmus, and Jonathan Tybur, were named to a 52-member squad that will represent the United States at the 2019 World University Games in Naples, Italy.
