Jimbo Fisher, Aggie players shift focus to second-ranked Clemson

After last Thursday's 59-7 thrashing of Northwestern State, head coach Jimbo Fisher and several Aggie players met with the media to reflect on game one and look ahead to Saturday's game against the visiting Clemson Tigers.

Videos will be added as they are available. Today's lineup includes Jimbo Fisher, Kellen Mond, Trayveon Williams, Tyrel Dodson, Jace Sternberger, Kingsley Keke and Keaton Sutherland.

The following are live, paraphrased notes taken during Head Coach Jimbo Fisher's press conference prior to this Saturday's game against the #2 Clemson Tigers. Please forgive any typos; Jimbo talks fast, and our goal with these notes is keeping up over accuracy.

  • After getting back and evaluating the film I'm glad that we got the win. We were physical but far from perfect in all three aspects of the game. We need to pay great attention to the details. They don't always bite you, but they bite you when they bite you. We need to make sure that we leave no stone unturned. I thought that we stopped the run really well. I thought we did really well in the end zone. We had eight penalties in the game but we need to get that cleaned up against the competition going forward. I saw selflessness in the blocking abilities of skill guys. We had good blocking -- good leverage. We've got to clean up some things and we're looking forward to the game this weekend against a great team in Clemson.
  • I think it's great to face a test this early. What we've got to worry about is ourselves. You want to play these games but more importantly, you've got to prepare for these games.
  • I thought that Mack did extremely well. Not only his physical abilities and his tenacity to make plays. Keke was very good as well.
  • We had a couple of hits on the quarterback the other night that we need to get cleaned up. One is too many. It's not always the offensive line, we have tight ends and running backs that can block. It's going to be very important against a very good Clemson D-Line.
  • The good news is that you know what Clemson is going to bring, the bad news is that you know (they're very good.)
  • It's critical for our offensive line to take steps. The physicality up front is going to be crucial. Clemson is going to have a great front but so is everyone else that we're going to play down the road.
  • You're not going to be given anything, you have to earn everything that you're going to get. If you get any opportunities you better take advantage of them. Clemson doesn't beat themselves, they don't give you anything.
  • Kellen Mond stood in the pocket and made good throws even while taking a hit. He created plays with his feet and did a really nice job. From that standpoint, I was very excited and pleased with how he played.
  • Kellen works hard. He models his game after Deshaun Watson but you have to be your own player. Deshaun's a great guy for him to study though.
  • We have to get the running game going in this one, we have to be balanced because they have to play it. Otherwise, it's going to be very, very tough to move the football.
  • It was kind of ironic to me that we're playing Clemson after I just came from Florida State. I guess it's fitting.
  • On offense, I believe we had tight ends in on almost every play, if not every single play. Dameyune (Craig) found Jace Sternberger. He said 'the guy's a really good player' so we started looking at him. Whatever happens, the system wants to judge them when they're 18, well we found him when he was 19 or 20. He's a dream to have, we should have played in 1955. We like flexing him out there -- he's a big body that can run routes like a wideout.
  • We have to rise to our own occasion on Saturday. That's what they could always do if they just do it. You respect your opponent and you go against their schemes but you have to prepare to play the best game that you can play.
  • Everyone always says that Trevor Lawrence can throw, well he can run too. I recruited the guy, he can play. Kelly Bryant is a great dual-threat as well. They're probably more similar than they are different. They are both great players.
  • I expect Anthony Hines to play on Saturday, he should be back and practicing this week. We expect him to play. I say this all the time about linebackers, we need more of them.
  • I think that Dabo Swinney is a very smart guy and he's very personable. Clemson has supported him, their Athletic Director was at LSU back when we were there. They have built new facilities and have done all the things that you need to do remain competitive.
  • Micheal Clemons is healing up but I don't have any update there. He's a week-to-week situation.
