Aggies add Memphis OC Darrell Dickey to coordinate Texas A&M offense

New Texas A&M head coach Jimbo Fisher took a big step in filling out his staff Monday, hiring Memphis offensive coordinator Darrell Dickey to serve in the same capacity for the Aggies. Football Scoop first reported the hire, and Billy Liucci confirmed the news that Dickey will serve as Fisher's offensive coordinator and also coach the Aggie quarterbacks.

Dickey has worked as the Tigers' coordinator since 2012, first under Justin Fuente and then current Memphis head coach Mike Norvell. He also served as interim head coach when Fuente departed for Virginia Tech.

The 2017 Memphis offense has been prolific, averaging 47.7 points per game, which puts them second in the country in scoring offense. The Tigers are fourth nationally in total offense, averaging over 548 yards per game. Memphis quarterback Riley Ferguson has passed for 3,971 yards, trailing only Mason Rudolph and Heisman Tropy winner Baker Mayfield. The Tigers also average over 200 yards per game on the ground.

Prior to his time at Memphis, Dickey spent time coaching both in the SEC and in Texas, including serving as a graduate assistant under Jackie Sherrill at Texas A&M in 1985. In the early 1990s, he coached tight ends at LSU and quarterbacks and running backs at Mississippi State. He also spent time at UTEP, SMU, and Texas State. He was the head coach at North Texas from 1998-2006 and led the Mean Green to four straight Sun Belt Titles from 2001-2004.

Last week Fisher added former Florida State assitants Dameyune Craig and Jay Graham to his staff. Craig is expected to coach wide receivers and Graham will coach the Aggie running backs.

I'm sure he'll do well, but I was hoping for a proven recruiter. Someone who's elite. Jimbo calls the plays anyways, and so our OC will be nothing more than a figurehead who can recruit.

Is there any chance at all that we will keep Chavis? I really like his style and feel like the Aggie defense gets better every year

If Jimbo is calling the plays, what's his role? I read that he'll coach the quarterbacks but whats the point of an O-coordinator if he doesn't call plays?

His offensive credentials are simply too good for us; he actually has had success running an offense and even serving as HC for a team.

He will be offered a HC gig a year from now.

I'm guessing Fisher will use Dickey's system but Fisher will call the plays

The best example is Sherman, we didn't have an OC so there wasn't a coach making schematic adjustments during the game or coaching their players. We stagnate as the other teams adapts and the players aren't coached on what needs to happen on the next series. Jimbo is tactical decisions and on the front line, the OC is strategic decisions and rear line support.

Pretty sure sarcasm but if not...

Some guys just don't want to be a HC. See Chavis. If he wanted to be one he would be.

Or maybe he hasn't received an offer he's willing to take yet.
