A&M Soccer extends winning streak, beats Vanderbilt on Senior Day, 2-1
Senior day got a little more special as the Aggies extended their winning streak to nine, defeating Vanderbilt, 2-1.
Mikaela Havey, Stephanie Malherbe, McKayla Paulson and Haley Pounds were honored in the Denior Day ceremony before the game. Pounds, who tore her ACL in a previous game, received surgery earlier this week but was able to attend.
Ellis Field was electric from the get-go. The Aggies started off strong, confident, and determined.
The first half was scoreless, but the Ags remained zeroed in.
In the 46th minute of play, Commodore Simone Charley rocketed the ball into the back of the net, putting the Commodores on the scoreboard.
The lead was short-lived. Piper Grace spent little time blasting the ball into the net from the left, putting the Ags on the board and tying the game.
Shortly after in the 58th minute, Addie McCain launched the ball into the Commodore goal, giving the Aggies the lead, 2-1.
Throughout the rest of the match, the Ags remained motivated and strong. The effort paid off, and as time ran out, Texas A&M celebrated the victory on the field.
Texas A&M came out on top in shots (19-7), shots-on-goal (7-4) and corner kicks (8-1) against the Commodores, and the victory marks the Ags' eighth straight SEC win and equals the school's 2013 record in the category.
“The team is committed to each other," A&M head coach G Guerrieri said. "This is not a group of individuals, This is a talented team made up of individual great players, but they play for each other. I think it being Senior Day was that much more special, and they were going to go out and do it for Miki (Mikaela Havey) and Mac (McKayla Paulson) and Steph (Stephanie Malherbe) and Haley (Haley Pounds). The team was going to do whatever it took to get them the win today on their Senior Day.”
The Ags will return to action this Thursday against Mississippi State at 7 p.m.
