Sam Torn discusses changes coming to Kyle Field game day experience

Key notes from Sam Torn interview

  • The Kyle Field Game Day Task Force is a joint effort between the 12th Man Foundation, the athletic department and the university to take a look at everything involving game day at Texas A&M. We’ve been working on this since January and have included over 100 people including student athletes.

  • Aggies always respond to crisis and they have a chance to show that Saturday night with BTHOHarvey effort. We have a chance to show the college football world why we’re different Saturday night. As opposed to throwing things on the field, we have an opportunity to show up and be Aggies.

  • We had 11 different work groups and our players told us the greatest thing about being a Texas Aggie is the connection to the fans and students and how loyal they are. This Saturday we have a chance to show who we are, so we need to show up, stand up and we need to buck up.

  • There are two main goals of the Kyle Field Task Force:
    1. To make sure we have the most intimidating environment in college football.
    2. To provide a superior fan experience.

  • When we talked to the players, they told us that the defense needs constant disruptive noise. We looked at our in-game experience and we found out that we were too scripted, so now the Yell Leaders have full authority to manage the game and create that noise.

  • The players think the 12th Man towels make a huge difference, which is something we’ve gotten away from a little bit, so we’re going to provide ways to make sure everyone has towels to bring to the game.

  • There are going to be enhancements with the team and getting the noise level up, we want to disrupt and impact the game. We looked at everything from a customer standpoint and we’ve spent hundreds of thousands of dollars to fix sound, and we are working with Levy to create more affordable food options.

  • This is a partnership, at the end of the season we will survey our fans and these listeners and ask how we can improve. We're about Texas Aggies working together. This is an ongoing process and we're excited about it.

This would have been great 6 years ago (or 5 or 4...). But late is better than never. I think we were surprised that Kyle was almost no advantage over most of the SEC. Even the schools without great fan support are in intimidating environments several times a year. We can't pull attention away from the game. We should be loud the entire time we are on defense, not just on third down. Through huddles, time-outs, official reviews we shouldn't let the opposing offense communicate. We haven't been doing that like we once did. The same trite media everyone else produces has largely taken over.

Awesome. Will the Bugle award circle jerk and Chevron ass kissing check presentation be axed as well? Hope so.

Aggies used to not need recognition for acts of generosity.

A&M as an entire institution has become "too scripted"...that's what happens when you become a large corporation...you lose the excitement of being the "start up". Not that I or any Aggie wants to be considered a "start up", but when you're trying to be the largest university in the country, it has to be run like a business, top-to-bottom! Some of these changes are basic logic, but it's good to see things are being constantly reviewed, especially now that the "new Kyle Field" has two seasons under its belt.

I like Torn and what he stands for...always have. If there is any family associated with A&M that bleeds integrity in their decisions and love of the Aggie traditions, it's this family (I went to and knew both of his sons while @ A&M...their commitment has been there for years)! Very glad he is leading the efforts!

- more winning

- less commercialism and artificial noise. Really. Puts hurt on the eyes and ears.

- no early starts. More evening games.

Sam is my classmate and a former head yell leader. We've had some differences of opinion over the years, but I would never question his loyalty to or love for Texas A&M.
The person that is not willing to fight and die, if need be, for his country has no right to life.

No commercials
No on field presentations. NEVER EVER
Nothing on Jumbotrons but replays.
Yell Leader and FTAB should be the ones to work out who does what and when.

It would help if we win some conference home games.

This worries me, unless the "hundreds of thousands of dollars to fix sound" was a bunch of new band intruments.

This x100.

Not to minimize the current efforts, but the real test comes when HEB calls and complains the band and yell leaders are drowning out their "Tailgate of the Week" commercial.

When we talked to the fans, they told us that the defense needs to be better. We looked at their in game-volume and we found that it is hard to scream at the top of your lungs quarter after quarter, game after game, season after season only to constantly see your defense allow third and long conversions. The defense now realizes they have to actually not suck every year to create that noise.

This is all well and good, and I hope it extends to less presentations.

Nobody cares about a math professor winning a spelling bee while drawing a triangle.

We don't need to stop down to recognize the women's equestrian team.

We don't need hear about and clap for our players dance moves or if they can sing the songs to a Justin Bieber song.

Less announcements about the upcoming trash pick-up in BRYAN city parks.

Less recognition for people that have managed to wake up and get dressed for the last 50 years and make it through the day.

Less, less, less.

More band, more highlights, more updates on other SEC games, more focus on the game at hand, more unscripted dead time - no announcements, no commercials, just let the band and yell leaders and atmosphere be.

Agree with all except the part bout recognizing other sports team championships. These kids work their tails off wearing TEXAS A&M on their jerseys and deserve a chance to hear a wildcat and applause from the AGGIES at Kyle. This is a LEGIT use of time at Kyle and its ALL about the students and Aggie Championships . The rest can GO !

Less 3rd & 14 conversions = more noise. Pretty ****ing simple.

Gabe seemed a little rude in the interview. Didn't give him much time to explain the changes.
