Big 12 commissioner Dan Beebe took questions from reporters Tuesday at the annual league media event. TexAgs was there with exclusive video as Beebe discusses realignment, the LHN, A&M's stance and more.
Here are some quick notes, covering what I feel might interest you the most from Beebe's 20-plus-minute gathering:
* The meeting with the NCAA on August 22 is meant to develop a process for figuring out how any university network will be able to interact with the conference as a whole. The time has come for decisions to be made and it's time to get things done. Everyone is coming with a spirit of cooperation and of insuring that the conference is in the best place going forward.
* Understands that the Big 12 will not get the benefit of the doubt and that there will be vultures in the air. Have to prove to people that the Big 12 is in a solid place going forward and that it will be a force to be reckoned with in intercollegiate athletics.
* The big concern with the Longhorn Network is whether high school programming can be run on the network. Can't see how that could be a possibility but that all has to be carefully considered so that the right decision can be reached.
* Wrong to assume that rhetoric from others is a crack in the system (conference). As for Bill Byrne, he usually does not speak softly about his feelings. He has that kind of force and intent. He also spoke strongly on Monday about his commitment to the conference. His practice is to work hard to keep the conference together. He's just expressed a strong concern about a specific situation. But a decision maker has never said that they were leaving if they don't get what they want.
* When Dr. Loftin talked about "uncertainty," he was talking about uncertainty regarding the Longhorn Network. He was not uncertain about whether the conference was going to stay together ... he was talking about uncertainty with the Longhorn Network. That's why everyone is meeting soon. But again, the Big 12 will not get the benefit of the doubt.
* When Brent Zwerneman jumped in to say that he was at the Loftin press conference and that Loftin was definitely talking about the uncertainty of the conference, Beebe responded by saying that he did not receive that message or understand Loftin's comments in that light.
* Feels as good today about the longterm stability of the league as he did last year. This is a new day and nobody knows all of the ramifications yet.
* There is a chance that the NCAA could decide to hold off on putting high school games on the LHN for one year while they take time to fully explore it, but that remains to be seen. You don't want to get in a situation where there becomes a rights-bidding situation to see who broadcasts, say, Southlake Carroll games and networks for Texas, Alabama and other schools are all bidding on high school TV access.
