Colonel Campbell's Final Flight

We wanted to share this film released today by The Association of Former Students.

Missing for more than 48 years, an Aggie shot down during the Vietnam War is finally laid to rest by his family in this short film from The Association of Former Students.

The remains of USAF pilot Colonel William Campbell '52 were flown last week to Washington, D.C., and interred with those of his widow at Arlington National Cemetery. The Association is grateful to the Campbell family for trusting us to document their father's return and share this story with the Aggie Network. We also appreciate the hard work by Andrew, Clay and Lindsay at TPG to help us tell this powerful story.

Colonel Campbell's Aggie Ring was recovered in 1991, worn by his widow until her passing, and then donated by his children to The Association of Former Students, where it remains on display.

As Porter Garner wrote today in his annual Memorial Day message to the Aggie Network, "Stories like those of Col. William Campbell '52 remind us that Memorial Day is about more than numbers, it is about the people who served with honor and distinction and the families that miss them daily."

We invite you to explore more of Colonel Campbell's story at tx.ag/ColonelCampbell

This is a wonderful story about an American patriot, his loving family, and an exemplary, everlasting, and loving bond between husband and wife. I am proud to revere his memory and to be among his Aggie brothers.

My grandpa, '58, was just telling me stories about his close personal friend Bill Campbell on Thurs. Bill was not only his friend, but also his Flight Commander. I have heard about this story a number of times as they flew together several times, including the previous night. As the video states, both my grandpa and Bill were Night Owls and this missions was at dusk instead of their usual night time flight. My grandpa recalls discussing the different tactics with Bill after their respective Christmas break. The loss of Bill and Col. Clark on Valentines' Day in '69 is still a very emotional discussion.

I'm so happy for the Campbell family that their hero and father was honored, in his posthumous homecoming. In case anyone from the Campbell family is reading this, know that there are many others outside of your family who have been touched by Bill, his kindness and his sacrifice for our Country.

May God bless and "here".

Thanks for this video. I am a pastor in Wisconsin and put this video on in our sanctuary before our worship service this morning. Usually people are talking and fellowshipping and typically ignore what is playing on the video screens before we start. In just a few seconds, people were in the seats totally captivated by this story. It really drove home the point of the sacrifices made by our military and their families for our nation. Thanks again.

At Colonel Campbell's funeral at Arlingon National Cemetery, Cathy Campbell read aloud a letter she had written to her late father. In it, she told him of the love and respect Aggies had shown their family. "We were embraced and folded into the Aggie family," she wrote.

The Association of Former Students is deeply honored that the Campbell family allowed us to document their father's final journey in the short film "Colonel Campbell's Final Flight." Although none of the Campbell children attended Texas A&M, they each demonstrate enormous strength of character and have an abiding respect for the school that their father loved. We are honored to know them and proud to have them as part of the Aggie family.

We remain in touch with the Campbell family, and we will share with them the comments posted here along with the rest of the outpouring of love and well-wishes our reporting has generated among the Aggie Network.

Stories like those of Colonel William Campbell '52 remind us what today is really about. As you enjoy the Memorial Day holiday, please take a moment to remember those like Bill Campbell who gave all in service to their country, and all their families who still live with that sacrifice daily, including the families of the 1,611 still unaccounted for from the Vietnam War.

Do we know when his remains left Vietnam for Hawaii? I witnessed a recovery ceremony in Da Nang last summer. Maybe July/August time period.

God Bless Col. Campbell and his family.
