Key notes from R.C. Slocum interview

  • I've got great memories of working at Kansas State. The school reminds me of A&M and there are wonderful people up there. That was my first college coaching job and we had some good fun and some good players.

  • Of all the places I could coach in the country, Texas A&M was the place I wanted to be. I never dreamed as a kid that I would be able to coach there. I was privileged to coach there for 30 seasons and enjoyed the heck out of it. I don't have an Aggie Ring, but I've got several rings with A&M on it from various championships and whatnot.

  • In my lifespan pf knowing a bunch of legendary coaches, of all the ones I've ever met Bill Snyder is the best football coach I've ever known personally. There is no one that has coached college football better than Bill Snyder given where he's done it at.

  • Kansas State uses an old-school philosophy and will not beat themselves. You have to beat them. It will probably be a great game and they will definitely be well coached.

  • I've known John Chavis for a long time and he's obviously a very good defensive coach. He's just a few players away from being where we'd like to be on defense.

  • I remember going into the 1998 Big 12 title game with a new system and a new quarterback. A lot of credit for that performance goes to Branndon Stewart because he was ready to play on a championship level that day.

  • We were 15-point underdogs but we had great leadership and knew we would win that game. I told the team at halftime that we were doing fine and that they just needed to keep doing what they were doing. We came out in the second half and finally got it done.
