The Texas A&M Volleyball team was back in action Friday night and extended their SEC winning streak with a 3-0 victory over South Carolina. After experiencing a rough patch prior to conference play, A&M has bounced back and performed well, reeling off five straight conference wins. The match against South Carolina marked their first home game since September 25th, when the Aggies picked up a win against the Auburn Tigers.

From the get go, Texas A&M was all over South Carolina, jumping out to quick leads in all three sets. The Aggies dominated the first set, winning handily 25-6.

South Carolina was able to fight back a bit more in the second set, but ultimately the Aggies came out on top, 25-15. A&M finished off the sweep of the match in a hard fought 25-18 third set, holding off the Gamecocks who were threatening late.

There were no ties or lead changes across any of the three sets played and won by A&M, a further indication of the Aggie dominance in the match.

“We were in the best rhythm we have been in all year,” said junior Stephanie Aiple, “it is great to have this feeling back of being a dominant team.”

The Aggies hitting percentage was at a season high on Friday night, and junior Kiara McGee and freshman Hollann Hans led the team with 11 kills each. Gabby Litwin posted a season high 10 digs.

“As a team we are on the come-up. Mentally we are so much stronger and we are finding out how to play with each other,” said McGee. “Grinding it out and playing for each other and is a great feeling.”

Head coach Laurie Corbelli was pleased with A&M’s strong start and dominance across the board, especially at this point in the season. The six points allowed by the Aggies in the first set ties their record lowest allowed in rally scoring, previously set by A&M earlier this season in a 25-6 fourth set win over LSU and in the last regular season match in 2013 against South Carolina, a 25-6 second set win.

“I would like to say that I am surprised with this win because we haven’t been starting that strong, and that is something we have been working on,” said Corbelli “I saw a really consistent focus from my players.”

The win over South Carolina brings the Aggies to 11-6 overall and 5-1 in SEC play. It also marks the 599th win in head coach Laurie Corbelli’s head coaching career, as well as her 499th at A&M.
