The Coach: Billy Kennedy and the art of proving the doubters wrong

See also: Billy Kennedy named SEC Coach of the Year, five Aggies make All-SEC teams.

As Billy Kennedy finished cutting down the nets in celebration of Texas A&M’s Southeastern Conference basketball championship on Saturday, I kind of expected him to turn the crowd and flash the “No. 1” sign.

I just wasn’t sure which finger he’d use.

That’s a joke, of course. Kennedy has way too much character and is much too classy to resort to such gestures.

But could you really have blamed him if he’d addressed his detractors among the A&M fan base by asking: “How do you like me now, witches?” Or, something like that.

There is no doubt Kennedy has heard and/or read the critics that have called for his dismissal and questioned his abilities as a coach.

That was clear in the press conference following the Aggies’ 76-67 victory over Vanderbilt when he gave thanks for the support he’s gotten at A&M.

“The support has been tremendous from the administration, most of the fans and a lot of loyal supporters,” Kennedy said. “We’re really thankful to be part of a special run.”

Most of the fans have been supportive. Still, there has been a very outspoken group that has relentlessly bashed Kennedy.

Matt Sachs, TexAgs Kennedy's tasks upon arrival included overhauling a roster that lacked the athleticism to compete in the SEC and was suffering from APR issues.
Kennedy's tasks upon arrival included overhauling a roster that lacked the athleticism to compete in the SEC and was suffering from APR issues.
They’ve accused him of destroying the program. They attacked him for having a mild-mannered personality. They’ve suggested he’s incompetent. They’ve maintained he cannot win at a high level.

When he proved them wrong by delivering A&M’s first conference championship in 30 years, they gave credit to assistant coach Rick Stansbury for A&M’s rise.

No matter what Kennedy does, some Aggies just won’t give him the respect for a job well done.

He took over a declining program in 2011. He had health issues. He had to rebuild a minimally talented roster. He had to dismiss players. He had bad luck with injuries.

Last year Kennedy appeared to have won over most of his detractors. The Aggies were 20-8 and appeared destined for the NCAA Tournament.

Then, Danuel House broke his left foot. A&M suffered three straight losses and had to settle for the NIT.

That added fuel to the 'fire Kennedy' crowd.

It’s not that uncommon for a team to collapse when a star player is injured. It happened at A&M in 1994. The Aggies were tied with Texas for first place in the closing weeks of the Southwest Conference race. Then, Joe Wilbert sustained an eye injury in a loss to SMU. Losses to Baylor and Texas Tech followed. The Aggies eventually ended up in the NIT.

It happens at other places, too.

Cincinnati was ranked No. 1 in the nation in 2000 when Kenyon Martin broke his leg in the first game of the Conference USA Tournament. The Bearcats were eliminated in the second round of the NCAA Tournament by Tulsa.

After last season, Kennedy vowed A&M would reach the 2016 NCAA Tournament. He’s made good on that promise.

Kennedy’s team could win a game or two in this year’s NCAA Tournament. That would be a remarkable accomplishment considering A&M has reached the Sweet Sixteen just twice in school history.

Speaking of accomplishments, on Tuesday the SEC named Kennedy Coach of the Year. It marked the fourth such award in Kennedy's career — one in the Southland Conference while coaching Southeastern Louisiana, two as the coach at Murray State in the Ohio Valley and now one in the SEC.

Other programs surely have noticed what Kennedy has accomplished and are likely impressed.

Matt Sachs, TexAgs Now, Kennedy is the architect of Texas A&M's first conference title since Shelby Metcalf roamed the G. Rollie White sidelines.
Now, Kennedy is the architect of Texas A&M's first conference title since Shelby Metcalf roamed the G. If LSU opts to make a coaching change would Kennedy, a New Orleans native, be a candidate for that job? If so, would he take the call?

He should, but probably would not.

Kennedy strikes me as being more loyal to A&M than maybe some Aggies are to him.

Yet, the main reason I think he would stay is that he worked so hard to recruit freshmen Tyler Davis, Admon Gilder and D.J. Hogg.

That trio, along with sophomore Tonny Trocha-Morelos, should form the nucleus of a talented team for the future.

And as Kennedy continues to recruit well, he could be flashing that No. 1 sign again and again.

He’ll be using the index finger, of course.

Why don't you just say, OK, we waited too long in my opinion, this was a great year and the result of BK's hirings, recruits and coaching, but I still question the long term success of the program under BK.
Bruh, that's exactly what people have been saying.
Not speaking about only this thread. I'm talking about the dozens of threads and comments that still belittle the results this year (weak SEC, strong Big 12, lucky to get recruits, lucky the NCAA, yadda yadda yadda). In other words, it was a fluke, I was right all along regardless.

Or... stay with me here... he could just stick with A&M and get $10 mil guaranteed for 1 NCAAT appearance

Anyone who watched the first four years knew this was coming. He's a very bad bench coach. Similar to early Drew but now his teams don't even play hard.

Somewhere out there is a thread where 90% of texags was thrilled for Turgeon leaving and Kennedy being hired. I was not apart of the texags "group think" and was blasted for it

Told you so?

Is the number 10 or 7 or something else. I'm not necessarily a Kennedy supporter but I just don't get why this even matters.

Basically he is proving everyone who thought he would flounder again without a competent coach on the bench like Stansbury right.

Another dumb revisionist history post. If you really WERE here then (doubtful), people were somewhat relieved MT was gone (his personality, coaching and team style didn't play well on here) but were mainly pissed at the timing. BK seemed a better personality fit, but was pretty unknown. Cautiously optimistic is the very most you found.

You're free to go back and look at my posts (a couple) on Kennedy when he was hired. I cited kenpom advanced metrics and predicted BK was in for a rough ride. There was no indication that Kennedy's offense could work at the high D-1 live. It's too mistake prone. 3 point defense was bad, and he didn't know how to coach up bigs...and yes those posts received a lot of criticism.

When BK's year 1-2 became dumpster fires, pumpers began to tear town Turgeon. After mistakes in year 1, Turgeon was solid and mad the NCAAT every years. He's just a grinder and sour puss...

In years 4 and 5 recruiting, transfers and Rick Stansbury made a difference. Now it's imploding just like years 1-3 and the last 10 games of Year 4.

jml2621 --

You need to stop posting.

You're using logic, reason and data driven analysis in your post to make sound conclusions about our program's success (or lack thereof) under Kennedy.

Have you no shame, don't you realize he's one of us and goes to the right flavor of church we Aggies like? The product on the floor or the development of the players be damned.

He's worth every red cent.

I was around back then. The overwhelming feeling was that BK seemed like a good guy but his resume was not very impressive and probably didn't warrant the position and paycheck. It seems that some posters have convinced themselves that people hoping BK would be good is the same as people predicting that he would be good.

You didn't even need the advanced metrics. He was a career .500 coach. Those kind of win percentages put you in CBI/NIT territory, not Sweet 16.

very few folks wanted MT fired. Virtually no one. MANY folks wanted him to do better in the tournament and mid season slumps. But he was getting A&M to an acceptable level each year, even if some years felt like he didn't maximize upon the teams he had.

Byrne made sure to read TexAgs, so he had BK throw in that stupid "look to score within the first 14 seconds" or whatever, and everyone got all happy.

Then he took the team overseas and we heard about team chemistry with the young kids and how the first year was going to be great. Then came the diagnosis.

Then Dash led the team to like 95 points and a dismantling in the season opener against whatever scrub it was, and everyone freaked out thinking it really was going to be a special year.

Then we finished 14-18.

You clearly don't know my thoughts on what I think should happen at the end of the season...and I've posted it frequently over the past couple of months.

For some reason, the fact that I don't choose to portray Kennedy as a mind-numbed moron like some posters have done means I'm a default Kennedy apologist. There's no middle ground with many posters. You can't be objective and be critical of those things that deserve criticism or give credit to those things that deserve credit. No, if you "like" him, you choose to find the positives to confirm your view of him. If you "dislike" Kennedy, then you look to cherry pick the negatives and only discuss the bad things.

Just because I show frustration at how posters debate the abilities of Billy Kennedy, you are incorrect in assuming where I fall in the debate.

Going back to my first sentence, I think it is in A&M's best interest that a change be made at the end of this season because next year's talent pipeline will attract a very good coach. That may not be the case in the future.

Given the overall weakness in the SEC, I think Turgeon, who is a much better coach than Kennedy, would have gotten us to a Sweet 16. I think he may not have had the talent Kennedy put together but he would have outcoached and his teams would have outplayed most SEC teams. I think he would have gotten a high enough seed to get an easy path to the second weekend like Kennedy did. He would not have needed a superior HC on the bench like Kennedy did to do so either.
