No. 15 Texas A&M stumbles on the road again in 76-71 loss to LSU
Freshman all-American Ben Simmons scored 16 points and grabbed 11 rebounds while Craig Victor also added 16 points in the post as the LSU Tigers bloodied Texas A&M in the offensive paint and came away with a hard-fought 76-71 win in Baton Rouge on Saturday afternoon.
The loss brings the Aggies' conference losing streak to five (18-7, 7-5 SEC).
Danuel House led Texas A&M with 20 points. Senior Alex Caruso added 14 points with Jalen Jones and Admon Gilder chipping in 12 and 11 points, respectively.
The Tigers raced out to an early 6-0 lead and stretched it to 14-6 at the 14:50 minute mark of the first half. The Aggies responded with hot outside shooting from Jones and Gilder and inside buckets from Tyler Davis to eventually take the lead and open up a 37-33 lead at the half.
A&M's torrid shooting pace continued in the second half, stretching the lead to 42-35 two minutes into the period.
For the game, the Aggies shot a blistering 56 percent from the field and never cooled off.
However, LSU answered every Texas A&M bucket with a relentless attack in the paint, dominating the post and grabbing 14 offensive rebounds and collecting fouls in the process.
That paid off in the second half as the Tigers scored 16 points from the charity stripe to Texas A&M's two points at the line.
For the game, LSU shot 29 free throws compared to just seven for the Aggies. Texas A&M was whistled for 23 fouls on the afternoon while the Tigers committed just 10 fouls and never reached the bonus.
Despite the discrepancy at the free throw line, Texas A&M can once again look at turnovers as a key component to another tight loss on the road.
The Aggies turned the ball over 19 times, with six of those coming in the opening minutes when LSU took the early eight-point lead.
Both teams flipped the lead several times in a close back-and-forth battle throughout the second half. Texas A&M held its final lead at 60-58 with 6:24 remaining. LSU's Keith Hornsby hit a three-pointer with 3:03 remaining to take a 68-64 lead and the Tigers wouldn't look back, cruising to the five-point win.
The Aggies had to play most of the game without starting point guard Anthony Collins, who was limited by a stomach virus. Jalen Jones did not start the contest due to a hip pointer sustained in practice this week.
Texas A&M returns to the friendly confines of Reed Arena for the next three games.
First up will be the Ole Miss Rebels on Tuesday at 8:00 pm.
