No. 15 Texas A&M drops third straight, 63-62, to Alabama
Anthony Collins misfired twice from the free throw line with just over two seconds remaining as 15th-ranked Texas A&M could not finish off a comeback bid and fell to Alabama, 63-62, in a Southeastern Conference basketball game in Tuscaloosa.
It was the fourth consecutive SEC loss for the Aggies (18-6, 7-4 SEC).
Less than a minute earlier Collins hit a three-pointer to bring the Aggies, who had trailed by as many as 11 points in the second half, to within one point.
Tonny Trocha-Morelos then rebounded a missed jumper by Alabama’s Retin Obasohan with 29 seconds remaining.
That gave the Aggies a chance to pull out a victory. Collins attempted a shot and was fouled by Alabama’s Donta Hall.
Collins entered the game shooting 93 percent at the foul line, but was unable to hit at least 50 percent when it mattered most.
His misses were the final mishaps for the Aggies, who committed 13 turnovers and surrendered 14 offensive boards while getting out-rebounded 36-29 by Alabama, which is among the weakest rebounding teams in the SEC.
Jalen Jones scored 21 points to lead the Aggies. Danuel House added 12 and Collins had 11 with nine coming from three-point range.
However, senior guard Alex Caruso had just two points while taking only two shots.
Alabama (14-9, 5-6) was led by Obasohan with 16 points, while Riley Norris hit for 11 and Shannon Hale came off the bench for 10.
That trio accounted for seven of eight Alabama three-pointers.
A&M trailed 32-27 at halftime, but came back to take a 38-37 lead on Jones’ three-pointer with 16:52 showing.
However, a rash of turnovers and missed shots enabled Alabama to come back and take a 45-38 lead on a jumper by Hale with 12:24 left.
The Crimson Tide lead grew to 58-47 on a pair of Justin Coleman free throws with 6:34 to play.
The Tide maintained at least a seven-point lead until House hit a jumper to cut the margin to 62-56. A pair of free throws by House brought A&M within 63-59 with 1:27 left.
Caruso then rebounded Coleman’s missed jumper, which led to Collins hitting the three-pointer that brought the Aggies within one point.
That one point was enough to continue the Aggies’ losing streak.
